I've encountered a big problem to shmooth my model (first one :thumbsdow ugly, i know!). I want to keep a cubic aspect involving metal plates while smooth it a little . When i try to smooth zones, the model warps and/or collapse. I need some help. How can i proceed?

Thanxx

PS: i am also looking for texturing tutorials for Maya4. Good links are welcome :bounce:

you can make it also smooth without smoothing with simple bevels

and you can add polys where the plates should be not so smooth

not sure but can maya "weight" edges if you use subidvs?

just checked the online doc and it's possible, but only if you have maya unlimiteds subidivision

just check the online help (Full Crease Edge/Vertex)

I had this same problem on a model I turned in for a final project. I wanted to maintain a hardend look to the plates on his chest and legs. What I ended up doing was hardening the edges of the polys. Im not sure what you would do in nurbs but in polys you can go

Edit Polys > Normals > Soften/Harden > Options

and with all the edges you want hard selected. Check all hard, and apply.

smooth the metal plates seperately from the rest of the model and set the continuity to something lower than one. The closer to 0 continuity is the closer the smoothed faces will follow the original, pre-smoothed shape.
