Hi folks,

Discreet have begun shipping 3ds max 5.

<edit: Clarification. I checked with Discreet and the subscription service is on TOP of the $3,495 - and keeps 3ds max users current and updated with each latest bug fix, feature set update etc. There is a leasing program, but those details are managed between the reseller and customer on pricing/ terms/ dates etc.>

The beans are over at 3D Festival (http://www.3dfestival.com).

wait wait, im skeptical....
is this 390$ thing mean that for one year i get a max 5 lisence or does it mean that its a one-year 390$ maintenance contract on top of the 4k$ purchase price to keep it updated??

I'll bet it's the latter option. Otherwise a bit too good to be true...

Reads like a maintenance contract:

"...Discreet will also be launching its subscription program, both single user and network versions, for $390 the first year and $330 for renewals. Discreet Subscription ensures customers timely access to the latest upgrades and enhancements while simplifying the budgeting process.
..."

damn that's bad :/

it makes perfect sense, the piracy is too big to just "release" it a year for that incredable little amount of money.

thats crap. Why pay that much money for a year when you could just go and buy maya or lw or c4d and keep it for aslong as you want??

they are going to be losing some serious fans if they keep this one up. And customers

? mayas license only works for 1 year. unless you get a permanent license. ( but not many people have those.

Are you sure? I thought they changed all of that when they lowered the price to $1999... I thouhgt if you bought a seat for $2k then it was yours, whether you upgraded or not...

I just called AW and they said that if you have bought Maya 4 as of 7-1-2002 then you automatically get 4.5 when it ships. They also said that purchasing Complete for $2k without Support is a permanent license and wont expire after a year...

good to hear. i guess they changed it. i remember the place where i did interning doesnt use it no more because their license ran out and they didnt feel like upgrading because they were almost strictly houdini/Jaleo combo.

Ok, so You want a Deal on Max then?

L00kie here:

http://www.motionmedia.com/images/menus/main_frameset.htm

click on:
max 5 promos and upgrades

second Item from the top

That price is for max 5.0, if you own other 3D software.

Add the subscriptoin option, and it entitles folks to a $390.00 upgrade to the next version of max if it ships within a year. example: say max 6.0 Maybe
Thats about half price for the upgrade.

:D

jaleo is a really cool compositing app for sgi ( well sgi last time i checked ) its super expensive tho.
2 years ago it went for 90k not sure how much it is now. its got some really neat NLE stuff. decent paint engine. etc. fast too.

Just in case you didn't already know about edu pricing:

http://www.journeyed.com

$699.98 (max, character studio, and reactor)

if you are student or faculty....It is a full version ( I have a copy on this comptuer right now) the only diffrence is the licence agreement says you can't make money with it. But, you do have the option to do a commercial upgrade.

I know about the educational version... problem is, MAX is how I'm trying to make my living, soooo.... that's kinda awkward.

Folks, it is false that the $1999 price for Maya is "just for 1 year."
