View Full Version : After Effects Plug-In
Linds 07-29-2002, 05:40 AM I thought some of you might be interested in the attached movie. It's a TV commercial we've just done for Holden NZ. We used the Maxon AfterEffects Plug-in to export camera data from the Cinema animation into AE5.5 then used the data to attach 2D animation and graphics to the 3D model.
The plug-in worked a treat, and gave us a result that would have been almost impossible to achieve otherwise. Hats of to Maxon for another great productivity tool - and it's FREE!

Oh, BTW, without getting drawn into the current debate about what has or has not been included in the forthcoming upgrade, I'd like to say I can't wait. It looks like Maxon are getting closer and closer to giving us the 3D app we all want. I know we all pay handsomely for the privilege, but it's still nice to feel as though someone is actually listening to the users wants and needs.
Cheers

Thanks for the good feedback.
The ad was turned around in two weeks from approval of script and story board. Two of us worked on the job. I did most of the design and 3D work, building and animating the engine, and a few of the other components - and made up the artwork for most of the other 2D graphics. My buddy and DMG partner Dan did most of the After Effects work including figuring out how to integrate my Cinema renders and camera data with the 2D stuff.
I can’t say it was completely stress free experience, we ran into a few niggles with the plug-in having memory problems, and loosing chunks of data, but having Cinema and After Effects talk together like this opens up a lot of pretty exciting possibilities.

hey nice work, saw the ad on the telly last night.
Do you guys use C4D for all your 3-D work... the Borrocca (sp) ad?

Very nice.
How did you handle the masking of the objects as it moved from the front of the engine to the back? Did you have to manually do it, or did you use the alpha channel of the engine while switching from a layer in front of the engine to a layer behind the engine?

Hi Matty, Yeah they're really flogging it on the telly at the moment. I'm always sick of the sight of a job when I Finnish it, without having to watch it over and over again when I get home. Also, no matter how hard you try, and how careful you are, there is always one or two things you wish you had changed or done differently. A repeating texture may you overlooked, or a ragged mask you never had time to fix. These little things become more and more screamingly obvious every time you see the job, untill they're all you see.
In answer to your question, yes Cinema is the only 3d app we use at the Department of Doing. I started using it about three years ago (Version5) mainly for visualising and illustration work. I've had occasional crisis of confidence over the years when I've felt like I should be using something more sexy like Lightwave or Maya, or at least something that people have heard of. - I always get a kind of blank look when people ask what software I use and I tell the "Cinema4D" - but to be honest, I don't think I want to learn a new 3D app from the ground up. (Something about old dogs and new tricks.)
Things do seem to be looking up for us Cinema users, it's finally assuming an air of respectability, and is beginning to be supported by third party developers which is a good sign.
It's also nice to know that there a couple of other Cinema users here in NZ, I had begun to think I was the only one.

Yes, we rendered the Engine animation with an alpha channel (straight, not pre-multiplied), and used it to create a mask in After Effects.
