View Full Version : Spacecar
JoelOtron 07-13-2004, 08:41 PM Hey guys
I've been working on a project which involved having to design and render a space car (FUN!). Since I was pressed for time, my good friend, and fellow C4d artist/illustrator Bill Melvin, who I work with often, modelled the car and scene initially, and I modified it based on the style we were after. Bills version was great, but I still had to model more details onto it and redid all the surfacing so it jived with the rest of the material we created. I thought it came out pretty well. I am working on some animations l--will post those eventually.
Original render (background painted in P.S.):

Dude that's an AWESOME car, let me say that again, AWESOME.
Now for the critics: The 'function' of the bulby things on the hood isn't very clear to me, it looks more like a hypernurb extrusion than anything else. Maybe a roster of some kind would look cool (like the bonnet Veilside makes) instead of those undefined things.
Well that's about the only thing I can nag you about, all the rest is absolutely gorgious, the materials, the looks, the design...inspiring :)

That's nice Joel, although I feel it suffers from too many obvious extrusions in some places. Still it looks very funky.

Yes--I'm in total agreement about the extrusions. Some areas work, but some are just gratuitous. The goal was to rely on actual surface details rather than cretaing a texture map, which wasnt working well as you can see in the first iteration. Sometimes I get a bit extrude-happy. So easy and its fun. :) For the final concept illustration, we will be seeing it from the front and smaller. It will work for what it was created for, but I agree that the details could be more "function" oriented.
Thanks guys
It definitely has personality. I like it. Good start on texturing.
I have a few suggestions:
Use NUKEI with BP ( layering multiple NUKEIs ). Use BP to paint the fusing textures ( this is how I wrote it to work although very few have ever used it that way :hmm: You could then use it with a dirtynuts VM or similiar polynormal shader to get some dirt details ( which I think should be very subtle but there ).
Really good start!
Best Regards,
darf

Hey darf
I actualy used dirtynuts (well now its........ "DIRT"). I calculated the dirt to a vertex map and layered it ontop as an alpha, since I was using Danel as the base. I put some random noise alphas and gradient alphas on top as well for some dirt splatterring.
but I'm ALL EARS on the Nukei BP method. Could you post a simple jpeg? Could be a sphere or something like that--not totally sure I'm with you.
Thanks!
How have you been? Your Core stuff has been looking great.

Heres the final approved image (flaws and all). I will work into it for myself b4 animating.

That is very good work. My only crit goes along the lines of the others- some items on the hood look like they were added to give it detail, but no function. If it is a flying car it may be modeled to look more like a sports car. Having extra pieces sticking out would make it less aerodynamic.
Perhaps turning those extruded pieces on the hood into a simple bump map? SLight grooves and lines in the hood suggest it was assembled from many pieces with the intent of forming a smoother, aerodynamic surface.
Awesome, awesome work. That last scene touched up with the explosion is looking nice. Get it animated and I'll faint!

Thanks Venkman
In 2034, electroids are all the rage. Those things in the front are just electroids. You should see its hydraulic boogie action when it lands :)
I might even add a whistle tip:

(sorry about that link)
I hear you on the disfunctional stuff. As a bit of background, the script calls for this to be a sort of transformer type thing. So there would be panels and stuff flipping around--bad excuse....I'll work on it though
Appreciate the feedback!

cool joel looks like something of a departure for you...love the care very cool. wish we could see more collaborative works posted seem to be thin on the ground so its good to see in c4d forum anyways.

Hilarious and funky. I like it.
One thing that came to mind was that there could be some asymmetry on the hood extrusions.

Update with animation test (needs some tweaking--I know)

I really like that car! It looks so... crisp :)

I love the overall design of this craft. Very... err.....retro-futuristic?
Well anyway...it looks great. And yes, please take it easy on the extrusions :)
Good work!

Awesome work here... I really like everything about this work, as do our kids... their mouths just dropped and you should have seen the admiration on thier faces... that's good enough to be in a movie our youngest said right off...

I love the approved final image. Flaws and all. The extrusions don't really bother me, but yeah I'm easy.

Very cool Joel! Can't wait to see the rest of the animation. One thought I had was that the front of the car might nosedive a bit just before it launches. Or maybe it could heel over to the side the way old muscle cars did from the engine torque hitting the mounts (think '67 GTO convertible--aaahhh!).

Thanks everyone.
Adam--yeah Theres a lot I could do to tweak the car motion. It pulls back too far b4 moving forward and doesnt accelerate fast enough. I think the engines pop out too fast too. I want to add some pyrocluster (hopefully Stormtracer!) exhaust beneath it as it rises and behind it from the engines. And eventually the environment will be completed.

The approved image is great. i love it. The retor sports car turned spaceship kind of puts me in mind of the DeLorean in Back to the Future.
I think it would really benefit from some asymetrical details on the hood (someone already said this), and also from a little more transparency and specularity on the windshield--maybe so you could just see the silhouette of the driver.
Great stuff
