View Full Version : Mary Ann (concept for cg animation)
Baldasseroni 07-28-2002, 01:53 PM Hi everybody,
I did this quick draw in Photoshop for reference to start modelling two characthers in CG.
Any comment is really appreciated.
(the face of the doll is inspired to the little doll of Asuka in Neon Genesis Evangelion anime)

Hi Eklettica, welcome to the board.
Nice idea, dog's great (maybe loose the tail)
Okay, you're asking for comment...
Maybe it's because I don't know the character you're referring to, but I really don't like the artificiallity of the hair. I know she's a puppet, but maybe give her a hairstyle that goes with the leather jacket a bit more. Or a bandana or a cap or something. Her hair tied back in a bun (is that still good English?) might really suit her.
They could be a bit meaner-looking too.
She also reminds of a Bride of Chucky (a.k.a. Tiffany)/Axl Rose crossover. Nothing wrong with that BTW, so I found you some reference.
You asked for comment, so you got it... ;)

Hi jeroentje, thank you for the sugggestions...they are really interesting...
Anyway i was inspired by a specific kind of evil rag doll ...

so the strands as hair is almost an obliged choice...(and to be honest they are easier to handle when i`ll pass to do the 3d model)
Thanks for your feedback anyway, i really appreciated it :)

Hehe, I get it.
Anyway, I'm wondering why you base your own character on someone elses. Think it could even be better with some changes. I love the leather jacket for instance. Could be like some Punkbaby's ragdoll or something... Do you mind if I give it a try somewhere in the next 2 days, if I can find the time?

Well, the idea of a rag doll with buttons as eyes is not original at all...eheh...my mum has a similar model too.
Anyway if you want to give it a try i think it would be nice, any suggestion is obviously welcomed :)

Maybe not, but I think that a ragdoll looking like an early eighties London punkette could be very interesting...
Lack of time and the best weather here since 3 years are not helping much, but I'll see what I can do.
Ciao to you too, jeroentje

Hm... only thing I got till now is this thing I did on a yellow 3M-post-it-memo, while installing some new software at work today. (God I hate rebooting when you got better things to do.)
Anyway, think it's good for the general idea and feeling I had about it, maybe not doll-like enough yet. I'm taking this all to illustrator and will do you a proper thing next.
Tell me what you think first (apart from that it's a crappy scribble ;) ). This could be a very nice joined-on-the-board-thing.

Hey jeroentje, first of all ...thank you for the effort, i really appreciate your contribute...Well, the model u propose is almost a complete restyle of the head of the doll, i do have to think about that...i`m still convinced that the button eyes are very mean, because they have no expression, while i strongly agree with her mouth sewed (at least it seems sewed, huh ?)
Then another good suggestion is the waistcoat instead of a leather jacket...maybe made of jeans...yes, i think this is really wild...
Thank you guy, you are really great :)

I have something better in mind for the eyes actually.
If you chip a piece of a button, with the piece of wire thats holds it sawn to the HEAD (edit - HEAD was the word supposed to be here dammit) as the iris, you can make her look a bit more evil, (like in my poor sketch).
I really meant that as a black leather motorcycle jacket actually. I own one like that (old and smelly, from the times when grunge was new ;) ).
Anyway, this was just some finger excercising. I have something really cool in mind. I hope I can work on it somewhat tonight.

I think it`s great..now i understand the idea about the eyes...yes, it`s quite cool...the broken buttons really resembles eye sockets.
To be honest you made a really scary doll...maybe too much for my purposes...anyway i think i will take some of your advices and will do some modifications to the concept..but don`t expect a fast feedback as yours..i`m quite slow and lazy. :P...and here sun shines too...
Thanks for all , you have really been of help...i`m starting to love this board ehehe..

You wanted to make a little children's story LOL
Oh well, Harry Potter's scary when you're eight.
I thought of the eyes as if you could change 'em and give the face some different emotions under different surcomstances (someting tells me my spelling's off somehow ;) ).
Anyway, here's my last update. Less is more I always say.
And I like it so much I'm even thinking about loosing the bag after 3 months and making it my new avatar :)

Back again...following the suggesions i did some quick modifications...not much too relevant except the hair...anyway i think that now she`s a bit more evil...eheh
The most clever of you will surely notice the new tooth of her cute little puppy...

Oh I see. Maybe edit that first post that it's been updated to keep the continuity in the thread...
Anyway, I think it's a lot better this way
But be carefull that she'll still look like a doll in the end, and not like a lil girl.
And keep posting new updates :bounce:
cheers
