Hallo, I'm pretty new to LW. I had some fun with 3ds, and LW's way to manage objects is quite odd to me, maybe I don't get some substantial things.
Example: In 3ds a big structure (say, a robot) is made of smaller parts: head, arms, etc. You can select them and rotate, move, on the stage.
In LW I found the layer interface. How do I manage a robot in LW? Making one part per layer, having thus a robot as a multilayered object?
Or do I create a part per object, save, import and assemble them in the Layout program?
I noticed also that LW requires to place in each layer the simpler object, because if I create a complicate obj made of primitives in the first layer, I cannot select those primitives anymore as objects, but just select polygons or points.
Thank you for explanations
m.

Yap this is the solution... Make hierarchy in Layout, or in Modeler using Layer settings window.Or do I create a part per object, save, import and assemble them in the Layout program?
This is the old method... Worked with LW 5.x and still work with 7.x

Yes all primitives or other objects in the same layer will react like one object, but u can select polygone frome one and hit "]" to select connected polys and manipulate with this selection...

ok first off RTFM!!:wip:

now in lw you can group things in several ways, surface, point selection, parts... as for rotating layers in layout make sure you adjust the pivot point, also you could use bones to make it easier.

good luck

oh one more tip after you select a poly from a object in a layer with many objects press ] to select the entire object.

layer in lw is good, u can copy or paste to other model(new file) lw can handle lot's of file in modeler TIPS alwas open ur layer tab press ctrl+f5 , it's ok if u create the model in one layer(but it contains several part based on ur project) but don't forget to give ur pieces a different surface (press Q for new surfaces) or make points group, etc , then u can select the parts individually, if u want to edit it just hide others or move the part to new layer (just as easy as pree "c"(copy) and "v"(paste)) and if u want to animate it, the individually object must be in individually layer, but hey it's not just like that, u can keep ur objects in 1 layer and use bones with weight map or Shock Monkey(plugin in layout)TIPS again always open ur Statistic tab, press "w" to select ur parts more easy.....
I suggest u buy a good book, like Inside Lightwave 7 by Dan Ablan if u really interested in Lightwave.....
