Anyone here take HDR rendered sequences from their 3d app into shake before?

what are the benefits and downsides of working with this High Dynamic Range data?

I am not going to sing the praises of .hdr specifically. But working in a colour spece that is higher than 8 bits per channel is very useful. Basically it means that images have a more information than the computer will display at any given time. This means that you can acess more data from your images in the very bright and very dark sections of your image. This is a wonderful thing if you are trying to do some sorts of extreme colour manipulation. If the image was only 8bpc it would spaz out and start to clip whereas if you had more data you could pull more datail into the blacks and boost the whites without forced clipping.

One example of this is discussed in the recent cinefex article on troy where they used openEXR in their pipeline. They were working with a sequence at night that had lots of fire and 'hot' elements in shot and they needed to maintain good contrast without loosing either of the extremities.
This is especially true when you are working with film as your final output medium.
