View Full Version : Environment: doctor's office - "Before the Shot"
Mr Blue 07-13-2004, 02:09 AM This is an attempt (WIP) to recreate "Before the Shot" by Norman Rockwell.
The boy(poser prop) is just a place holder, still need to pose and adjust him. The lighting is BS, will work on it once the models are all done. Working on the doctor's scale right now. After that, need to model the jars on the cabinet, some clothing (from poser) on the ground and chairs, a rocking chair, and a doctor (from poser again). Oh ya, the curtains shouldn't touch the ground... oops.
It's probably too early for crits at this point, but maybe as I progress, people might help with ideas to make it better. And again, just so I don't get "the lighting sux!", I know... I'll get to that later. Right now, I just wanted an idea of what it might look like in the end.
The only things I think I'm done with (I hope) are the chairs, cabinet (minus stuff on top), floors and walls.

crit request - how are the proportions looking?
I’m working on lowering the top of the scale a little bit, but how about the rest?
Is the boy too big / too small? Etc..

is it me, or are there to many shadow sources in the scene, please let me know. Nope, not you. I just threw them in there randomly. Turning on area shadows should help... I think... But ya, too many. Anyone wanna give suggestions for light locations and types :deal: , I'm all ears.
hpslashluvr: Thanks. This size better for the diploma?
small update... not much, but an update none the less.
The chairs in the painting aren't as tall as mine. Should I shorten them or do they look ok?

I told myself I wouldn't play with the lighting till I was done... Oh well.
This is my current lighting (posting to get help to make better):
All omni lights, at 0.1 to 0.25 multipliers.
4 omni lights right outside the window in a square pattern (probably should switch to area light or something)
3 more omni lights in the room (mostly above the docs head, but off to the left to mimic light bouncing off a wall that isn't there... or something)
1 omni at the boys head level, over the chair nearest to us... was trying to brighten up his face
Oh ya, GI on, with 1 for primary bounce, and 0.8 for secondary...
Just basically tweaking and thinking "does that look ok?... I guess so." Any ideas to make it better will be appreciated!
I was trying to do a glass jar on the cabinet. When the primary bounce was lower, it seemed to be working; now there's just a big white blob... more to learn. (I assume I need a 'non-free' version of vray for vray materials to get the glass right) At least it doesn't look anything like when I forgot to uvw map a box. Had psychedelic spots everywhere. Thought it was disco time!
Other than that, I thinned down the chairs (thx asylum24), but then decided to bring the backs down a bit to compensate for the weight loss. The scale has some nice photo textures for the ruler part (not visible in the this small thing). I modified the window blinds and curtain a little. Hope it looks better. Also, added a rocking chair and some shoes.

I never know what vray will do. That wedgie didn't show up in the gui or with the default scanline renderer. It was my fault though in the end. Just like on the cuffs. Took care of it though I think. I think tomorrow I'm going to have to figure out who is causng these splotches. I thought it was from something on top of the cabinet. Now I'm thinking it's due to the cabinet itself... we'll see. VRAY - a blessing and a curse. For anyone who has used the free and the $$$ versions, does this happen in the $$$ versions too? (in http://www.metinseven.com/article_vray_splotches.htm , one of the fixes it gives is to use vray materials... either I don't know where they are, or they're only available in the $$$ version  )
Doc Baldy needs hair badly. :curious:
