I am rendering my scene in layers and comping it in AE. My question is this: Basically I have a sperm that burrows into an egg. I rendered the sperm and the egg seperate. Now, when I render them each and then comp them, they do not intersect. Instead the sperm looks like its just swimming in front of the egg. This is because when they render, the ENTIRE sperm renders. I need it to render only the parts of the sperm that are not penetrating the egg. How can I make Max exclude these intersecting areas? I am using Max 4.2

Assign a matte shadow material to your egg when you render your sperm layer. The matte shadow material will occlude whatever passes through or behind it.

I rendered the sperm and the egg seperate.

Sperm doesnt enter egg because there is no data which define the this part of sperm is in egg.

This simple scene does not require to render in seperate layers.

i dont have max here. so i cant do any test.

If you want to render them in seperate layers. Then you will need an alpha map. which define entered part of sperm in egg. So you can use it in compo.

As i said i dont have access yet. Try to apply matte material on egg. Or/and use render elements To get that alpha map.

Thanx for the tip, Jed; it seems to be working now. I've used the matte/shadow material before, but I totally forgot about it.
