1. How important is the amount of RAM for maya performance?

2. Should I get a 5900xt with 128mb or a lower model with 256mb of ram (I have basically narrowed my search down to the higher end nvidia gaming cards).

3. or should I just get a 6800? (the cheapest one, that is) ...... is the performance of one of these THAT much better than a 5900xt?

4. Which brands are good and which sould I avoid? There are alot of 5900xt's on the market, and the prices vary alot ( even though the specs look the same).

1. Do you mean the Ram of your Graphix card, or of your system?

2. choose cards with 128MB of Ram! They are faster and cheaper!
You don not need more than 128MB yet...

3. I think, the 6800 is the faster one...

If I were you, i would choose a Radeon 9800Pro!

I meant RAM on a graphics card.

I am also using Maya, and I have heard that ATI cards suck for Maya.

Also, im a student right now, but I plan on going into CG professionally.

Also, if I get the 5900xt and roll back to older drivers, will my agp 8x still work?

for Maya I would choose no "gamercard" like the 5900XT...

I would choose a graphics card, that is done for professionell CG.
For example a Quatro FX, a wildcat4 or a firegl...

I am using Maya, too.
And I have got a Radeon X800 XT - It works ;)

i have gf4ti4200 64mb, the thing is if you learn how to optimize workflow (hiding some stuff, wise modeling etc) you can work nicely, i'm sure you can choke every card even the best when you don't think while working :) my is pretty old but still doing it's job with maya, didn't notice any problems. go buy the best you can afford, and i suggest nvidia.

if your on a tight budget the fx5900xt should get you started, dont expect it to be the most stable system for 3d because its a gaming card after all.

But if you can afford abit extra for a mid range 6800, you'd be better off. And if its a pci-express you can get another 6800 and run it in SLI. As long as they are the same model and also you would need a mobo with x32 (or x16, i cant remember) pci-express though.

Heres some reviews of some 5900xt cards tho.

I had been hunting for a 5900xt since i heard they were really good value for money, and that pixleview card caught my eye.
But im gona wait for a good 6800 midrange card with pci-express.

Good luck adrenaline

i have a 5900xt and i use it for maya...never had problems at the moment...6800 is slightly faster than the 5950 ultra and much faster than all the GeForce FX cards because it has 12 pipes compared to the 8 and 4 pipes of the GeForce FX cards...

i think you only need to have 256mb of graphics memory if you are going to work with really heavy textures...

correct me if i'm wrong...a graphics card with a 256bit graphics core and 128mb memory is better than a graphics card with a 128bit graphics core and 256mb memory

thanks to all for the replys.

:)

so whats a good brand for a 5900xt?

will I have to change my powersupply?

Will the heatoutput be that much more than my current mx 440?

like I said above that pixelview card is a rather tasty card. It has a full aluminium cover with the heatsink, pdf2, 2.8ns hynix memory and its really great for overclocking.

The MSI, Gigabit, and albatron are other good 5900xt cards.

If you can, try to find one with 2.8ns hynix memory, from some of the reviews and comparisons they are apparently better for overclocking. I wouldnt recommend overclocking these cards unless you know what you doing.

Go for the BFG, that OC on the end there means Over Clocked. :D Yes its been overclocked for you and comes with a life time warranty at those speeds.
They have pumped the core clock from 390mhz to 430mhz and the memory clock from 700mhz to 735mhz.

Just read the second link I posted above, its a review of the BFG. The only thing is it doesnt come with any games .

Ohh and you shouldnt need to change your power supply unless your rig has a psu thats less than 300W.

Happy shopping budd.
