View Full Version : I've searched and found nothing... xp boot problems after update
Jb5k1 07-11-2004, 08:58 PM Hi all. I tried google and shtuff and i haven't been able to find anything on this. I forgot about updating windows and it turns out I've missed alot (like 40 heh), so today I began updating it. After I installed all of them and restarted, windows starting booting up with the loading screen then the computer restarted. I figured nothing was wrong so I selected windows from the little menu thingy (i have linux in here that im usin now) and it restarted again. This time I never made it to the logon screen. After I waited 15 minutes it didn't do anything so I looked on google on here. Everything for boot stuff was for win2k or win98 or something. I couldn't find anything wrong with chkdsk and I dunno what to do. Theres always that fixboot thing from the repair module but I dunno what that does. Anyone know whats goin on. I also cant get on to do a system restore and I can't do it from safe mode.
thx and please help.

Firstly - to start debugging things you'll need to turn off Windows's automatic reboot option from Safe Mode.
Right click on My Computer
Properties
Advanced tab
Under "Startup and Recovery" hit the Settings button
Just below half way down, uncheck "Automatically restart"
Once this is done, you'll have a better chance of booting into WinXP without having your computer reboot if there's a problem. You may still get your problem, but at least this will give you a heads up on your problem.
If this still doesn't work - boot into Safe Mode with Networking support. Hop on the Internet and go to http://www.antivirus.com and run their free virus scan. I had to do this today and it fixed a couple things.
Hope this helps.

Vandal, that sorta helped, but now my internet doesn't work at all, no matter how I boot the system. I tried using ipconfig commands and I get all zeros and when I try to renew it says something like it cant find what I'm tryin to renew. I also turned off my computer and unplugged the modem cause usually that works and gives me a new IP, but nothing. Think I got a virus or something cause thats what I believe is wrong.

I would say that if you were browsing the web with a unupdated windows machine it is likely you may have a virus now. I cant confirm this of course but it would not suprise me. Does this also mean that your antivirus software was also not updated? This would also be very bad.....
After seeing your recent threads I would have to say that you are heading into a total reformat, seems you are venturing into very technical areas without much understanding. Not to be mean but you really should understand such things before diving in. Especially if it is your only computer and other people use it as well.
If I was you once you get into windows I would back everything up that is critical before going any further.
Good luck,
James

thats what I assumed.
It's not that I don't know what I'm doing, it's that I'm incredibly lazy and careless at times. I'm going to reformat because I haven't in a while and I may have bad data from when I reinstalled windows b4 (without a reformat).
o well :banghead:
I'll be a bit more careful next time and scan and keep up my updates more often.
