View Full Version : Recovering a Damaged file
javierdl 07-27-2002, 08:13 PM Hi all,
Does anyone know whether there is hope for a file that has become damaged enough to cause the following alert window: "File Open Failed: file_affected.max"
(file name is not real)
I really hope this something I can do because I have put so much work and time on this file :(
I am running 3DSmax4 under XP, with an AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz, 256 SDram.
Thanks in advance,

Make sure that there is enough space on the boot disk for max to swap the file when it opens. For example if your file is 150 Megs, you must have another free 150 megs on your C: drive, even if your swap file is set on another disk.

DrPepperCan, you really should use incremental save with max, cause this is a rather common problem.
First check the autobackup directory in the max folder and find the latest autobackup file (if you didn't turn it off). You can open it from max if you check "all files" in File > Open.
You can try merging the damaged file into a new file but chances are slim. Try opening autobackup first so you don't overwrite it with your new file.
Be careful using files from removable media (don't do it basically)and keep a bunch of incremental copies.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately I don't think this is the case, as the file size is 450k, and I still have 475Mb in the C drive.
1. What about some utility to run it on the damaged file,
or
2. are there any lines of code I could just easily edit or remove from the affected file?
Thanks,

Thanks for your advise dvornik :)
Well, I did have such feature on, although I changed the Backup Interval from 5mins to 1min now, after your advise :)
So eventhough I had it on, it hasn't kicked in right when the error is produced for a couple of times :(
That's how I lost my file.

1 minute is way to often. How much work you can do in a minute anyway. Make it something like 5-10 if you are worried. Try merging the damged file into another file - it works sometimes. And you definitely need a bigger C: drive. You do know about the incremental save - that plus sign in the save dialog? Just making sure.

even some times max corrupts increment and backups files. This happend to me. SO what i do is to save the scence and run win explorer. goto folder where your scenes are located. select the active file and PRESS Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V. This is my most trustable way of backuping max files.

You can try merging the objects from the offending file onto a new scene... if the merge crashes, you'll have to merge the objects one by one to see which one is corrupting the file... or turn on the macrorecorder and open the listener before the merge... a list will appear showing the objects being merged... take note of the last object showing before max crashes... cheers!!

Wow, that's a good one Toonman :)
I already tried the merge, but nothing happens :(
And the worst is that there was only one object in my scene :(
Precisely what I needed to recover. I guess I'll have to do it again :(
At least that one was the version 03 of the file, so I still have 02.
From now on I won't only make a new file off the original for the next version, but also I'll do an identical copy on a second place, that way the second one will be my backup :)
Thanks everyone for your kind help :)

2 Method:
1- Try to open Autobackup max file in this way : look in autobackup dir of 3dsmax and rename all .mx file to .max file and try to open.......
2- Try to merge object from damaged file.......
ok?

try autoback\maxback.bak - rename it to .max
if you're lucky that might be a recent version of your scene - if not: i'd say you're screwed
