Hey everyone...

Been a while since i posted here. It was great to meet some of you in Denmark....that was fun.

Here are some demos and warm-up sketches i did recently for my art center entertainment class. These were all done on my tiny (and not so powerful) laptop, so they are at original res here. Again, very quick stuff (some are super rough); about 45min-1 hour per sketch, mostly painter w/ a bit of PS. Bits of photos were used to speed up the background stuff. I'll be doing some more in the next few days...so check back.

anyone going to comic con? See you guys there....

its amazing how 'super rough' can still work wonders when you know what you're doing with it.

the second one seems to be the cleanest one, not as many stray or overlaying lines. i especially love the warmth in the 3rd and last concepts. Wonderful perspective, but i didnt really expect anything less.

just curious, what cities did you use photographs of?

Feng how can you create such a nice lines digitally? Your drawing got a lot of lines going in different angles. I can imagine sketching vertical and horizontal lines digitally but not other angles... any tip please o_O?

FengZ

thank you guys for the encouraging words....

sorry i dont have any WIP for these, but i'll try to save some steps next time..

*edit* Panupat: I just saw your question. Yeah, drawing none 45/90 degree straight lines on the computer is a bit tricky. However, in Painter, you can rotate the canvas, so i just strike the line at the angle i'm used to, and rotate the canvas to match it. It's a bit easier in photoshop, since you can just hold shift and make straight lines......either way works well....

here's another quicky:

hey dude, love your work, am currently doing my major project at uni here in nz. Doing concept art for character effects and environments. I'd be honored if you could have a peek at my stuff. i think i've been progressing a fair bit, but have a long way to go! my stuff's under Focussed critiques, "genetic mutation and robotics"

Love your use of colour and line, and the speed! you've raised the bar buddy!

Amazing, Feng! Very nice.

How do you do those strait lines at random angles in painter again? I tried what you said and it didn't work.... I must be missing something. "rotate the canvas to match it"? I'm a little lost. But that's nothing new.

Again: Sweet stuff!

Please edit your post. Thank you.

Feng - Sorry, I have to mention it because I informed some others today about the rules. Could you keep maybe 1 or 2 of your favorites as images and change the others to url links, please? Thanks.

Amazing work Feng..as always.

I went to Denmark/Copenhagen to see your 3 hour seminar and was totaly inspired. The week after, I brought a wacom intuos 6 x 8 and painter.

I've only recently started doing concept art (since your class) and hope one day to be doing it for a living.

Thanks, you really got me started.

Hi Feng,
You are certainly getting a lot of mileage out of the loose linework and the inclusion of the photographic elements. Nice use of glare also. Lots of nice suggestion-plenty of room for the viewer to fill in their impressions. I especially like the #6 sketch-it looks as though you are improving every hour!:applause::buttrock:
I am also interested in quick ways of using straight lines in Painter so any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

First off, since I've never commented on your work before, I just want to say I really love your work. Even though I am generally more into 3D stuff, you are definetly one of my most favorite artists. In these pictures, I really like the design style of the buildings, and I think the great use of color adds a lot to each image.

I looked into how to use straight lines in Painter and found out a couple things. I found that with a few keyboard shortcuts that they can be created relatively quickly and painlessly. When using any brush, the v key will give you straight lines and the b key will put your brush back into freehand mode. To draw simple straight lines quickly, in straight line mode simply press Enter or v after the second point of the line is placed, thereby finishing the line. With the Enter key the polygon is closed and with v a new polygon (line) is started. The v works better for me because it doesn't add an extra stroke to the line and also because I can easily toggle between straight line and freehand brush modes. One thing that I wish Painter had is a guideline when striking a straight line. At this point I have to guess exactly how the line is going to place which takes a little more care and thought which brings down the speed of the creation of the piece. It's a little tricky when laying down parallel lines or a perspective line section away from the vanishing point.
I like how you are striking a large number of these straight lines in freehand brush mode (at least I think you are).
I hope the above info helps out some people out there who were wondering how to do this stuff in Painter.

Amazing Works !!:bounce: I was wondering how concious you are of the colours you use in your paintings? your use of colour is facinating!! Are you conciously placing certain colours next to each other to get a desired look or is it all a subconcious thing? Have you written any tutorials that I could study?..

Nice work Mike, it's good to see people demistifying Painter. I still say it's easiest to hand draw your sketch and then paint it after scanning, to get perspective right.
