I have some cinematic contract work coming up so I thought I’d do a crash course on high poly texturing. I’d like to push it a lot more, but I’m pretty happy with my first attempt. I definitely learned a lot doing it and am going to do more in the future.

I know there is a lot more I can do as far as shaders go, but for this first one I wanted to keep it simple. It only uses diffuse, bump, and spec maps. I still have a lot I’d like to do but I just don’t have the time. Oh well, there is always the next one. I really had fun doing this. I learned a lot and feel comfortable working in this manor now.

Here are some shots of the work in progree:

The only thing that I’m still struggling with is the eyes. I tried to apply this tutorial (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/tutorials/antro_eye1/antro_eyemod_01.asp) to max as much as I could but got completely lost when trying to supplement the Maya shader with Max’s material editor. If anyone has a tutorial that is geared towards Max’s material editor I’d greatly appreciate it.

Great work, nice edge loops aswell! :)

I must say I'm impressed by the ears, great shape and volume.

Do you mind showing us the texture map ?

I knew it would be good as soon as I saw you're the one posting :)

my only crit is the ear tone.
the tissue is very thin there and it should be a bit more reddish/purple like on the nose, imho.

****Update Above****

Thanks for the crits!

Well I decided to do one more pass at it. I got the eyes a lot closer to what I want but I still haven’t figured out how to get them to shade properly from the front to back. Oh well practice makes perfect so I hope to do better next go around.

Very nice, bobo! The only critique I have is the eyes look painted and flat. Maybe it's just the lighting

yeha, the eyes do look painted and flat, but thats mainly cause they are  when compared to real eyes. the texture in that tutorial is very good, if a little red, but the shape of the eye is poor. the eye is a totally different shape.

the typical noobie Joan Of Arc (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc_p2/modeling_of_the_eyes1.asp) tutorial gives quite a good method for the eyes. i did have another which was better...but cant find it. this method is much more life like. if that doesnt work, try giving the base shape a glossy layer.

hope that helps

Except for the eyes, that's some of the best stuff I've ever seen. The shaved area, the pores in the face... just frickin' awesome. I think you could add some creases (or whatever they are) in the lips. Also, he'd look badass with a beard or goatee.:D

The way you did the hair pushed back with so few planes is really interesting. I haven't seen it done like that before. Also, your texturing work is superb. I'm trying to learn more about texturing humans and this is reall great to look at. Are you gonna post the maps? I'd really like to see the specular map especially, as I'm having my own bit of trouble

Hey Bobo, it's looking really good. I like the overall skintexture and hair. The model is very nice too.

I have a few suggestions
texture:
Simulate some shadow from the eyelids on the eye by making the upper part of the iris darker. Overall the eyes feel a bit too bright, there is not much shadow on them.
The lips are too smooth, more variation and bump there.
More redish hue on some parts of the ears.
The eyebrows are a bit blurred. Maybe darken them a bit too so that the eyelashes don't stand out as much.
other:
The lower lip should bend inwards more where it meets the upper lip, now there is a very sharp line between the two.
The highlight on the eyes is a bit too wide, should be more glossy I think.

Good work nevertheless!:)

Awesome work! topology, texturing, everything good. Can you tell us a little bit about the texturing process, I´m still bad on textures, specially skin... so maybe you can share some tips or advices to us... :)
