hello all
please take a look at this character and tell me what u think,
it is based on a drawing done by a friend, modeled in max 4,
its not complete!
i have just started to texture it, and have just started to use UVWunwrap.. so go easy :p
my back ground is Industrial Design, but want to get into games
sometime soon, trying to build a portfolio.

I think the best way to determine polygons in any game, is if you have the model with the EDIT MESH modifier or convert the model to a MESH. The select the filled face triangle. It'll give you a better sense of how an in-game character is supposed to be.

MAX 4's Polygon modelling tools are good, and very powerful, but in terms of a game character, the girl you got here is WAY too many polygons for a game. Unless you meshsmoothed the model to get how it's shown in the screenshots. Keep

It's a great model if the game is going to be pre-rendered, but not for games like Quake3.

Go look at some of the models on Polycount (http://www.polycount.com). They make game characters all the time for real-time models.

I'm playing with a hybrid Orc model right now. He's part next-generation polycount(5000+ polygons right now) and part high-res models that I've seen on here. I'm still learning the best of both worlds now that I've been visiting this site and Polycount.

Keep it up tho! If ya need some more help you can talk on Polycount or just hit me up an email.

the reason there as so many triangles is i was aiming for
a character based game, on the current consoles,
i was thinking maybe a fighting game,
i have read they have poly counts as high as a few thousand
on some ps2 games..
there is a game called Xenosaga, u can find pics on this site:
www.the-magicbox.com
whith very detailed characters..
will try that filled face triangle thing..

want to try to do a character for q3 also, but its a bit daunting!

hehe, yes, a char with 1000 polies and a look like the one above, this would be nice. my experience is that the character polycount on the main characters are below 3000. if you want to create a character with fingers and some details you need around 2000 polies and it will look boxy or you have a low detail smooth character. feel free to check out www.dbki.de/lowpoly/ you will see 4 characters from around 900 up to 2000 polies. but the lady you have made looks nice :-)

Aladar,

Although in a sense, you're right that the ps2 and other nextgen consoles can handle a lot of polys for the characters, your use of polygons, especially in the face, does not justify such a high count. From the looks of it you're pushing the 6 to 7 thousand poly range, which would be acceptable ONLY in something like a fighting game where there are two characters on the screen at a time.

More importantly, though, the number of polys in the face will do nothing to add to the look of the model... You could take at least 75% of the face polys away and nobody would be able to tell the difference on a ps2.

For the amount of detail you currently have in your mesh, I'd say 2500 polys would be acceptable. If you're hell bent on keeping it up in the 5000+ range, you should find more dramatic uses for the extra polygons, like wrinkles in the clothing or a defined musculature.

Here's something to keep in mind when modeling for realtime applications.
Polygons are there mainly to dictate the character's profile or outline. If the extra polygons do nothing to enhance that silhouette, they can most likely be excluded.

nice model well sculpted, i think you have controled the shapes and proportions well, i too studied industrial design and am trying to get into games, your model is deffinatly very high in polys however...

have u found the polygon counter, it can be found on the control pannel under utilities>more vv usfull, especial for games orientated characters,,

hope this is of some help

oops!~
i am sorry
no it is not 1000 polies, for some reason i thought it was around 1500, but its closer to 5000..
just optimised it to 1000.. i feel very sad now...
it is so ugly..
i will do a 1000 poly version, and stick it here, :)

thanks for your feedback!
