Jb5k1 07-09-2004, 09:44 PM :banghead: :banghead:
Yay, I boot up the computer. SuSE 9.1 works great and I'm still configuring it but I get that jolly ol' blue screen of death. To quote my good friend Mr. Blue....
the error is : UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
if restarting doesn't help I should "disable BIOS memory"... like I know how to do that
and the little hex code lookin junk is....
***STOP: 0x000000ED (0X82FD8030, 0X0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)
anyone know if I can fix this without reinstalling windows cause I don't wanna do that right now.
thx, and quick responses are a great deal of help atm

You didn't even think about google did you ?
http://www.google.com/search?lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME --> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q297/1/85.asp&NoWebContent=1
I'd advice you to
a) stay away from computers or
b) STFW
if you need help making that decision, go for option a

The usual cause of this is overwriting your master boot record on the disk. This is the first partition and tell the OS how to load. Everyone installing Linux has done this at some point!
Check out those articles. fdisk /mbr rewrites the master boot record, but it can be dangerous - so do read up on it first (I am no expert).
And next time you install Linux - fdisk will overwrite the boot loader (Grub or Lilo) - install the boot loader onto the first sector of the PARTITION where you install Linux (or install it on the MBR of a second disk).
This is one of the reasons I prefer using Redhat as it's instalelr is pretty sensible about this (I once hit yes to the defaults by accident and it did the sensible thing). Mandrake is one of the worst. I have never tried out Suse.
fdisk is really a last resort though - try using the windows disk to recover it first. Also if you can mount the Windows disk and burn it to CD from Linux I would as you might not be able to get your Windows data back any other way.
Definitely read up on it though as I may have missed something important.

On a more serious note, Jb5, I'd be interested to know what you actually did to fix it?

reinstall/reconfigure grub/lilo should do it normally - or you just reinstall windows and then reconfigure grub/lilo . . .

Yep, that's what I thought would be best to do. Simple repair always did the job right for me. Glad it worked for you too.
dude your always breaking something :) and why didnt you just tell dad to use mozilla ? for ebay

....how many times have I nuked my computer over dual booting...:) ...mmm..memories. Most of the time it is usually windows that is the root cause for most of the errors. Especially with the MBR. It likes things the way they are and when I put linux on my older computer. It got really pissed at me and did the same thing it did to you. Glad you got it working. I finally decided to stray from the dual boot method and have dedicated boxes one for windows and one for linux. I mainly just use linux for coding work and as a hard working rendering peon. I find that you learn more when separating the two. Then you arent as tempted to go back into familiar ground. Have Fun!

you can always just leave the boot loader as it is with windows.. install linux.. and make a boot floppy instead of installing any of the boot loaders that it comes with.
this way when you need to go into linux you can and you wont screw anything up, and youll be able to choose either OS.
ive heard personally from people at work that suse has a habit of mucking up dual booting. personally i would go to suse forums :) to see how to fix your mess

Actually it appears to be a general 2.6.x kernel issue as evidenced here (http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2004-May/msg02114.html). It is known to affect SUSE 9.1, Fedora Core 2 and Mandrake 10.
