i'm building my next computer. could you please comment/advice on my specs :) i will be using a lot of 3dsMax with this...

MOBO: Gigabyte K8NS Pro nforce3 250
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
VIDEO CARD: GeforceFX 6800 128MB
COOLING DEVICE: Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu
MEMORY: 1GB Kingston PC3200 (i can't get a corsair here from japan  )
HDD: Maxtor 160GB 72000rpm
DVD+/-RW: LG
PSU: Antec 430W

i got some ideas from this forum but i still want to make sure if my specs above are ok.

does the motherboard above supports the geforceFX 6800 video card? (excuse me if it's a stupid question)

Dude your specs are just fine!!! I have almost the same and I use Max. So far I am satisfied!! How much does 6800 cost?

can't recommend it more, with front-panel firewire, USB, and audio, plenty of interior room, funky blue lighting, and front panel temperature monitor. And it's pretty sexy too;)

fine hardware ;)

if i were you, i would choose the CS901 or CS601 by Chieftech as case!

That cases are the best i have ever seen...

Any Chieftec cases are the best, I personally am a fan of the Dragon. Personally I would say stay away from the cheesy premodded cases - I dislike the looks of most premodded cases (and I like modding 'em myself ;)!) and from what I understand they're not the best in terms of quality.

As for the hardware - it's quite good, but I think Socket 939 would be a better bet. The cheapest processor you can get for it now is the 3500+ which is somewhat more expensive (around $500), but I think it would be worth it if you want to upgrade in the future and especially if you can wait for the 3500 to come down in price a bit (probably with the release of the FX-55 and 4000+).

Also a warning, I don't know how much this means to you, but AMD has this stupid thing now where even installing the non-stock HSF voids the warranty of the processor.

Which they check via telepathy.

You might want to reconsider that power supply.

The 6800 sucks a lot of juice. You might want to consier the Antec Truepower 550w PS.

not necessarily, yes the 6800 eats a lot of power, but it really depends on the 12V leads. You could have a 600Watt PSU with a 16A 12V lead which would be total crap for the 6800 and CPU. It's best to get a PSU that has 2 12V leads, I got the ENERMAX Noisetaker Series 370W Power Supply EG375P-VE-SFMA. It has two 12V leads; 12V1 is 14A, 12V2 is 13A. Combined Amperage 27A. If you plan to only have 1 12V lead for some reason, it's best to have anything higher than 18A. Otherwise, its a really unstable system.

No, he got the 6800 regular, NOT the 6800 Ultra. The 6800 regular doesn't require much at all.

As for the, HSF, heh yeah, there's really no way to check it without being onsite, but the same applies to overclocking doesn't it? I just don't like having to lie if they ask me whether I installed a new HSF.

yeah but it's not all that bad. The stock HSF that comes with the A64 does just fine at keeping temps low and it's quiet.

yes that board will support the geforceFX 6800 just make sure you buy the AGP version and not the PCI EXPRESS version, though it maybe a better idea to get a mother board with PCI EXPRESS as you will have more upgrade options in the future as AGP is starting to die out.

on the subject of cases i have the blue chieftech dragon case for my current system, mine is not as brilliant blue as in this pic though (i think its also possible to get "copper" ones)

You'll have to wait a little while to get PCI-E for an A64 though, I predict November (don't take that as fact though, it's just speculation, people are saying sometime Q4 for the nForce4 which makes sense - they would be crazy not to do it before Christmas). And yeah, I have a silver chieftec dragon, they're really good IMO.

Thanks for all the advice guys. i finally got my computer together yesterday. i am satisfied with it except for the crappy casing  i should have look around more.

Dementor3D - the chieftec cases are cool! too bad i can't get them here in japan

puppetmastah - the 6800 cost me US$390

Novakog - you are right about AMD voiding the warranty when you install a different cooling device. i installed a gigabyte 3d cooler pro anyway instead of the zalman. i dont know if that was a right move because the 3d cooler pro is a bit noisy.

Madmax - i got myself a 480W PSU, not antec though.
