hello everyone,

nice place!!! I have some questions for you guys. I wanna get back into 3d graphics *when I was doing it, it only lasted a month*

anyways I am a mask/prop maker. now that i have learned how to sculpt in clay I wanna know how to sculpt in maya or 3dsmax. I have maya 4 unlimited and I forgot what version of 3dsmax. anyways I was just wondering if you guys could point me in the direction on how to "sculpt" in either program. does anyone have a tut that is something you do everytime you create a head. I need something that is moron friendly cause this stuff goes over my head.

I am also wondering is there any chance you can open say a *.jpg file in maya and turn it into a 3d model? if so could someone explain it to me.

thanks a ton for your time and help.

well, in the hopes of lessening your initial learning curve, I would suggest downloading and using wings3d (its free, and is an excellent polygonal modeler). Or, since you are a sculptor, maybe you would be interested in purchasing zbrush (watch this: http://prymevalgraphics.com/martin_krol_vids.htm), which is about as close as you are going to get digitally.

But, since you have maya:

You can load an img file (including jpegs) into Maya's and Max's viewports and use them as reference when modeling. There is also software that allows you to take several photos of an object and produce a reasonably good model from it (if that was what you are asking). But most models are produced by hand, or for those with access to a 3d scanner, from a refined version of that data.
