View Full Version : How to create that? .. need help!
Nomad 07-08-2004, 02:03 PM Hello all,
Somebody asked me to create 3d french fries... I thought that was easy but by seeing the phtography I`m not sure how to create this particular texture... seems that it have some complex transparency effects on it :curious:
It`s for a print only so thers no need to show super real transparency effects at any angles etc... but I have to find a technique to generate multiple objects beacause there will be 30 fries of different shape.
I`m thinking about Hyper Voxels for this but to have a shape like this...

By advance thank you for any help.

mmmmmmm Voxelfriiiiiiiiiessss......gurrrrgle.
Looks like you could do that with polys and SSS, or Surface thickness or even plain old Gradients for surfacing and a displacement to jitter the polys.

Thanks for this food reply :D
Never used SSS on LW, thers a plugin or it`s inside ??
For the surface thiknes it`s giving relatively good results with edge transparency but I still far form the real fries.... but I keep working on this... thing :curious:
uhh doesnt look to complex try some dischape polys cut the top and bottom so they can subpatch right
Tkae them into layout use a dsiplacment map.....use,crumple, some turbulence or turbnoise and maype som fbm or dented.
you should get the look of those right their
then just apply some bumps and shades in surface editor
NB thee light plays and important aspect in the pic above u may need a gradient in the tranlucency or transparent properties to
A) show surface thickness
B) React to a particular light more so the key light in ur scene
thats my 2 sense

Close enough? (its a printscreen - remember u can use bump and spec textures on this).
if its ok 4 u, ask and i'll explain.

I`m far from something which I can say it`s "close" :argh:
The problem is the particular shape of the surface.. I`m afraid that I will have to model it in ZBrush... but if somebody have obtained this by using surface displacement that will be great to see that.

"Katarzis_o" nice but still far from the photo, especially the shape of the "big bumps"... I think that I have really to go to ZBrush to make that :argh: beacause I made not enough good results with disp maps to generate closer form of this surface. Hopefully I have until monday to deliver a first draft so if somebody knows a good method for that I`ll be glad to read about it.

Normal Displacement, no texture, just Ska SSS. The specular highlights are to bright and not enough AA

Yummy  ...the shape is just too round but the picture looks better than mine tests. Thank you I will follow this way. Just a "novice" question, I newer used sss did I need a plugin for that? :curious:

Just order some fries and take a picture of it from the top, side and build it as a texture map.
Convert it to a grayscale and apply it to your bump, displacement and translucency channels and mix in a little surface thickness and you should be good to go.
Cheers!

"policarpo" thank you, with those grayscales that seems to be a good and fast technique, especially if I will have to create 30 different fries. :D

yeah, you need a plugin called "Ska". You can find it here http://www.flay.com/GetDetail.cfm?ID=1255
