Well, the lighting and texture need just a little bit of work. Her skin doesn't look realistic, although it could if you worked with some specular maps, and possibly a light bump map. Also, the diffuse texture needs to be more random in color, because she looks like she's just a solid color. More shadows are needed too, even in this highly lit scene. Pretty good model though.

superb design  would be great if one could see the rest :D ... and for the skin - i find it good enough because the character is not placed in reality ...

Very nice! I like the fluid look of her hair.

Two small nitpicks:
1) The hair on the side of her head is a bit thin. You shouldn't be able to see her scalp.
2) Her ear has some hard edges on the inside. A bit of smoothing and it will be great.

Well done.

kyphur
07-27-2002, 12:45 AM
Yeah, it looks too thin and it also looks as if it's passing through the surface of her back and neck. Is that the case or is it just too short?

really nice great work one thing maybe the top of the ears needs work but expt that this is perfect.and l like the style of the air

I think the hair behind the ear needs to be a bit closer to it (from the growth point)...

she's lovely.

Adam
07-27-2002, 03:29 PM
hey that looks great:thumbsup:

the only thing that I would say is fix the ear and maybe soften up the jaw line as it approaches the ear. I think women tend to have smoother jaw lines. I love the hair and I think the textures look great. Also the light scattering on the cheek is a nice touch

very very nice indeed.
my only crits would be that the hair is a little too thin and should perhaps start closer around the ear.

also her cheek seems a bit flat i would look into bring that out a bit and making the jaw line a little les defined.

its very very nice :)

Hey I think that the final model is pretty good. I don't know much though. Where are you from and where did you get the ideas for your subject? She looks like someone that I knew before. Good work though. Peace.

Though I agree with the crits about the ear,jaw and hair, I still think this is pretty impressive.. any chance of some other views????

The face strikes me as being a bit too long, and according to my figure drawing book, the ear should be placed a bit hight too (between the bottom of the nostrils and the bottom of the eyebrows).

Great work, I really love the hair thing!

(I wonder what Lyppeter is so mad about!)

my english isn't good

i know the hair is thin, but i do nothing because software
if i add the number of the hair, in th rendering appear error
"out of memory" ,later 3d max auto close.
i don't solve

in the model ,around ears is tough,
maybe meshsmooth ought to add:)

about jawline and ears's position have little promblem

(ears are between the bottom of the nostrils and the bottom of the eyebrows,i dont't think so,because i notice everyone has some different)
thank for all of you advices

great pose and modelling:thumbsup:

May I suggest you a technique I use for the hairs so you won't have those memory problems:

I both use spline and patches. the patches are use for the wide locks I assign an opacity map made of real hair lock I shot with a camera thus I get a good random aspect for those locks.
and I use splines like you in order to have less uniformity in the "haircut"
you can check an example of what u can obtain here:
http://khaos3d.3dvf.net/version_eng/Moria_orc2.htm
althought its not finished I like the result

And soon I'll put a tutorial of this on my website

I think its hard to say this. If the head was slightly tilted downwards or upwards then those horizontal lines would meet the ear in a different place.

great work. :)

The face looks horizontal to me. If you look at the jawline, the forehead and the way the ear isn't tilted, I'd say it has to be moved up.

This pix is Great, and your detail doesn't have any interest Marcelus:

Maybe you should ask the moderators to build in a post reply button that automaticly posts a message with 'man that is awesome work!'. Wouldn't that be easy? Replying with a single click! Hell!, you could reply to all threads in just five minutes!
I bet everyones artwork would improve so much by that!

Let me quote from another thread (The lost art of critisism, in the general section) I think it sums up the problem quite well:

If someone posts an image on CG Talk, the usual reason is to get objective feedback.

The cases Sherban talks about is not uncommon. Everyone gives positive remarks and when someone actually posts an objective opinion, he/she gets flamed.

We (the mods) just have to keep a closer eye on things and keep the discussions as objective and friendly as possible.

L.

This pix is Great, and your detail doesn't have any interest Marcelus:
-oh, the face is a bit too long, she looks like an appel

I'm just pointing out things that I think could be improved, so it'll be an even better picture.
I was not the only one who thought that the face is too long, and the ear too low. Maybe his reference material has such an anatomy, but if it looks weird (to most people) then maybe he should change it to make it more pleasing to the eye.

-oh no, the fifth hair isn't realist, is physicly impossible, you should make shorter.

Are you blind? I never said the hair was wrong...in fact, I said I really like it.

I am not here to bash his work, I am giving feedback to improve it (in my opinion). Objective feedback is the most valuable thing to improve your skills.
If you do not like a board where people discuss eachothers work in a objective way I think you should go somewhere else.

Big compliments for Xmen3d, your work is very close to the original reference!

About the thin hair:
I might be stating the obvious here but I think all you need to do is color her scalp the same color as her hair - giving the impression of full rich hair at no additional rendering costs :)

ps. Very beautiful model. no crits on my part.

hey people . . get of Marcel's back. I really don't think he was out of line.

Isn't critique the point of this forum ? We post stuff to hear what people say so we can improve our skills. That's how it should be I think. Great skills and models can always be improved :)

If you are gonna make an animation of it though, i would go with what SHERBAN said and just make a darker scalp.

ok sorry, i find my post a little bit too aggressive :) (not really)

in fact, it makes me laugh to see people who critics a so little detail.

I can survive on this board Marcelus hehe thx
you'are (all) too serious! breath, go out....

i find no default in this pix, it's a head, and a head is not always symetric or doesn't respect anytime the strict rules of anatomy.

thus, it's cool to give a feedback, but an interesting feedback.!
it's true, Watch a moment please the reference book (xmen's post), it's strange, not? the girl's head doesn't respect the rules, her ear is too lower although she's real, no?

you understood i......

Xmen, maybe i don't have a good sight, but for me the girl sounds good even if her ear might be higher following others suggestions.

oh, one last thing:

oh no, the fifth hair isn't realist, is physicly impossible, you should make shorter.

Are you blind? i never said the hair was wrong...in fact i said i really like it

i was kidding on it! you are too serious, it's second degree! hehe

bye all

ok sorry, i find my post a little bit too aggressive (not really)

I'm not scared to say your post was absolutely useless. It didn't contain a single thing to improve the artwork presented. Instead of saying something constructive, you've only flamed somebody who tried to add something to the discussion.

in fact, it makes me laugh to see people who critics a so little detail.

It might be a small detail to you, but it was the first thing I saw when I took a closer look at the image. When I posted it, more people agreed that it looked a bit strange. So in your eyes it might be a small detail, but for other people (perhaps with a more trained eye) it wasn't.
If the rest of the head was poorly modelled, I would agree that my critics are nitpicky, but not with a good model like this.

Besides, even if it is a small detail, spending time on the details is very important, the details are what make your art look good and realistic.

I can show you pictures of people having 3 fingers. Yet when I model a photorealistic figure whose hand has only three fingers people are gonna comment on that.
My point is, we don't know that the model is supposed to have a ear that is too low, we jugde it by the standard human anatomy.
It might as well be an incorrect model as far as we know, and in that case we should comment on it to improve it.

So next time ghZaaaRK, don't be such an ass, and respect people who give honest comments, even if you think that he comments that are given are trivial.

Marcel
07-30-2002, 05:12 PM
I understand what you mean Xmen3d, you want to model to be as close to the reality as you can make it. You are right, it is a very good exercise to do that. (And it is very hard!)

Your Bruce Lee model is amazing, you can already recognize him! Could you show us a wireframe? I would really like to see that.

I know that it is a work in progress, but I hope you don't mind if I make a few comments :)

The upper lip seems a bit too large.
The chin is a bit too large and wide.
The nose is should be more pointy.

These things make him look like he is not asian.

I have attached two pictures from my figure drawing book about eyes, they might come in handy...

Do you know this animation? It dates from a few years back.
It's a 3d animated Bruce Lee, punching and with lip-sync.

It's a big download (13Mb) but it might be fun to look at. (The face isn't very detailed, but the expressions are very good)

even a beautiful girl could have a strange ear!
forget standard man, it'sn't a photorealistic pix and even it was one.

i'm really astonished, spread your ass guy, you're too serious!! i respected you but i don't respect anyone who "play" such a martyr!

Xmen, good begining for Bruce Lee.. be aware for his ear.

You still don't get it:
How do we know if it is supposed to be a beautiful girl with a strange ear, or if it just a flaw in the model that the maker overlooked?
If I'd see a render like that, I'd guess it would be the last option, because most of us are trying to model beautiful girls.

Calling me insane and a big psycho because I have comments on somebodies work is not really respectfull, is it. Not that I really care about how you think about me. It's just that people like you ruin the open atmosphere on this board.
It should be a place where we can discuss work openly, not a place where we are only allowed to post positive comments or be flamed otherwise.

Now let's not pollute this thread any longer. It's already clear to me that you do not and never will see my point.

on that bruce lee model

first of all you should probably start a new thread for it according to the new rules (in wip forum, better to do it now and just place a link here)

now on to the c&c :)

it looks very good so far, has nice feel of mass and definition to it, the whole facial structur looks very close, but i think the proportions are still a bit off (i guess i'm telling you something you already know, as you're not done with it)

well marcel kinda pointed out everything i also noticed on a closer look, and you already improved it by a great deal

another thing i noticed though: your model somehow looks more attractive than the 'original', this is probably due to symmetry - so you should pay some special attention to breaking it in the end (the symmetry) by adding some irregularities
