Well, just finished up this sucker for a Half Life 2 mod which shall remain unnamed, and I figured I may as well post it here so that others can tell me what I forgot, because I always end up forgetting something.. Anyway, this is a mass-produced Light Assault Rifle, so a fairly common weapon. It is 1698 faces, with one 1024x512 map, although in the renders I'm using the original double-sized texture. Thanks in advance to anyone who takest he time to tell me which obvious bits and bobs I forgot this time :) The texture map is also available if anyone is interested.

ehy dude, the idea ofthe gun is a good one, the modl itself...lacks details, you could chanfer some stuff, and the skin....well....it needs alot more work :P

keep it up:)

Yes, on looking again at it I can see that the texture was far from good.. As for the modeling, I wish I could, but I can't really add more polys without re-mapping,and I REALLY don't want to do that... Anyway, I redid large portions of the texture, so mayhaps people will have less to criticize? :) Or maybe not.. I don't claim to know what others will think..

My critique will depend largely on whether or not you're going for a somewhat realistic weapon, or a purely off-the-wall weapon. From the design, I'd guess at semi-realistic, in which case, here goes:

1. I don't see an ejection port. Unless it's that tan-colored rectangle right behind the handguard, in which case it's in the wrong spot, based on th position of the magazine.

2. The magazine itself should be placed further forward, since right now it doesn't look like there's any room for a bolt carrier, or at least enough room for a small one to move.

3. The grip looks a little uncomfortable. I'd suggest angling it back more. On a related note, the trigger and triggerguard look way too big, unless the characters in your mod have disproportionately-sized index fingers.

4. You're missing a charging handle of some sort (cocking mechanism).

5. You seem to be missing sights. If you mean for the entire sighting mechanism to be in the carrying handle, then that should be more or less parallel to the barrel, and not angled down as you have it now.

I'm guessing you didn't really have much in the way of reference when you were designing and modelling this weapon. As it stands now, the weapon would more than likely kill the guy pulling the trigger, rather than its target.

it looks pretty cool, bu LoTekK has some very good points there...but as with some games, some weapons are completely unrealistic, it really depends on what your going for. good work overall, your textures are lookin pretty sweet

In reply to LoTekK:
Yes, it is indeed semi-realistic, but emphasis on "semi" :) I haven't had much practice at making realistic weapons (nor, in fact, any weapons at all...), so ya, I would imagine it's not perfectly realistic.
1. As above, not much practice or knowledge of how a weapon actually works ;) I suppose the ejection port would have to be right across from the magazine? If not, please tell me where, for future reference.
2. Again, I don't know much of gun mechanics, except that they blow the explosive in the cartridge, and the bullet comes out :) But could the firing mechanism not supposably be built back into the butt?
3. Heheh, point taken, will probably move the trigger and handle a bit..
4. Yet again comes down to my lack of mechanical knowledge..
5. I can probably set some iron sights down on the barrel, now that you mention it.. Thank you very much for the reply, as it is well known that one cannot better one's self unless others point out what one is doing wrong :)

u should fake some specular highlights in the gun, add some scratches, and make it look a bit more metal, with some dirt, but not much, add nails, and suprssions:D
