View Full Version : Problem rendering normal maps
hi!
I am modelling a hero girl with normal maps in 3dsmax5.1, as you can see here:
http://membres.lycos.fr/dreamdesigner/sheroes/girl/high_low01.jpg
The one on the left is the lowpoly model with the normal maps of the one on the right, as you can see.
I have a huge problem if I want to render them. I have a plugin called Gnormal, and it doesn't render any normal map, it looks like it only renders a bump map...look at it:

Does anybody know how to fix this problem? maybe I don't use the gnormal as I have to use it?
Thanks in advance :),

I have a few questions for you.
What resolution is your normal map? What file format? What program generated it? Did you add UV-border-pixels (to avoid seams)? Is it a Tangent or a World map? Is GNormal in the Bump Channel, and is it alone in there? What's the Bump Channel spinner set to?
thanks for the quick answer EricChadwick :)
Well, I didn't know there was a Gnormal map, so I added a bitmap directly onto the bump channel :applause:
But even with the gnormal at the bump channel with the map, it still renders it bad:

The image is a "tga" of 1024x1024 px, generated by the ATI normal Map creator, I didn't know what were the UV-border-pixels, so I didn't add them. It's tangent space, now the gnormal is alone in the bump channel, with a mutliplier of 1, and the bump spinner at 130.
I don't know what happens, I hope you can help me...

Can't see what the problem is. Just seams? Or not strong enough? Maybe you need to play with the Expand Border Texels settings... maybe a larger Edge Pad.
Well, the problem is that I don't see the lowpoly model in the render like the one in the viewport. I like the one in the viewport very much, and the lighting is the same...I don't understand...:(
I would have liked to make some nice render with the model.
If you know any tips for rendering lowpoly models with normal maps...to improve their quality or something, I would like to know :D
Lots of thanks :)

Try increasing the Bump Channel strength. Also add some specular to your material. Adjust your AA settings in the renderer and maybe in the map. Make sure to fix the seams.
It won't look the same as the viewport, but you can do something close.
understood EricChadwick!
Let me give you my thanks and my respect for your constancy and kindness.

You're welcome!
Let me know how it turns out.

I had a similar problem and when I moved the gnormal map (bump map) to its own seperate channel it worked. Setup new UV's for the new gnormal channel... It might be the wrong way to do it, but this worked for me.
