I'm not sure if this is the right thread to ask this question in, but I was wandering if anyone out ther is using gmax? I just down loaded it like a week ago and am wondering if therre are plugins or scripts to make it behave a little more like the regular 3ds Max programs as far as modeling is concerned. I think its a cool program considering its free and all, but I'm used to max 4-6 and gmax's work flow seems to be a bit cluncky. For example there is no quick cut, or connect ege function, witch are some real time savers when your modeling. They have also removed the select edge ring/loop comands. Please if you know of anything that could help this I would greatly appreciate your advice.

I have had a bit of a play with gmax lately and have learnt a few things about it.The modelling tools seem to be based on max4 even though it has edit poly mode. It's like they have removed the most useful or time saving parts as you said, although subdivision surfaces are available in the modify panel. I'm not sure if you could get plugins to extend it's features, but after all it is meant to "just give you enough to be able to do it" type free package.

Do you think its worth it to learn to use gmax if you already know another max program [or any other fully fleshed out 3d package for that matter?

Yes Gmax is based on Max4 so the more advanced and useful poly modelling tools aren't there because they weren't written then.

Don't know if you can install and run maxscripts but if you can, then see if Mesh Tools will work. Much of the functionality of max 5 and 6 polytools come from there.

Check on scriptspot, mesh tools is right at the top of the top 10 scripts and there is a max 4 version.

In answer to Hot Souse. No, I wouldn't think it was necessary to learn gmax if you already know how to use the full version of max. It's basically just an older version of the software with fewer features and no rendering ability. You'd already be able to use it no problem if you needed to (except for missing all the cool stuff from the newer versions).

If you want a basic introduction to 3D modeling, then working with Gmax will show you a few tricks. It'll introduce you to more powerful tools used in other 3d apps. But MayaPLE will show you even more.

If you're already a 3D artist, and want to expand your knowledge... I would not recommend Gmax. I used Gmax for a very long time...and all that time was wasted.

If you really want a nice program to learn with...pick up Maya PLE. After a while, you don't notice the watermark. 3ds Max/Gmax's workflow never worked for me. Maya's is nice. Wings3D's is even better.

It's a nice opensource (FREE!) modeling application that'll do wonders for your workflow, and allow exporting.

So in short. Gmax is worthless, unless you want a taste of Max's workflow.

After about 4 months, I barely learned anything, and wasted my time, becuase I've started using Wins 3D and it's alot easier to learn/work with. I would recommend you give it a shot.

i agree with ElysiumGX, i used Gmax for a year and it was pretty effectively wasted time, i would advise getting a learning edition of a package, Maya is definately good.

Thanks for the help everyone. I down loaded Gmax because I wanted to get involved in game moding , and I thought it was made specifily for that purpose. I actualy do have maya ple and softimage exep, but I can't effectivley use them on my computer because my graphics card does'n't support Open GL. They usualy crash when I make anything more complicated than a cube (sometimes even with just a cube). I learned 3D using max so the work flow is very easy to me now, But from what I have experienced with Maya I think it's a very good program also. any way thanks to everyone for the advice and the link to scipt spot.
