Im wondering if there is a considerable difference between these Xeon processors:

3.06Ghz 512 533FSB vs 2.8Ghz 1MB 800FSB.

Also 3.2Ghz 512 533 vs 2.8 Ghz 1MB 800FSB

I'll be modeling, texturing and rendering in Maya, so I want to see what kind of difference there is going to be.

Next-
HP is offering the new 8200's with an option of dual Xeon 2.8, 3.2,3.4,or 3.6. These are all 1MB 800FSB. Im assuming that If I choose the dual 2.8's I can switch the processors out with 3.6 when they come down in price??? Shouldnt have any compatibility problems?

save money and hassle: build your own rather than spend way more to get a shoddy product with shoddy service. After all, you have the best tech support right here on CGTalk, who needs to call up HP only to be connected to somebody whose english you can't understand? (no offence to anyone, but this does happen a lot)

I cant really tell you anything about those prosesors. But i can tell you that you should probably look somewhere else other than HP, I think that I f you really want to stick to a very well known computer store try Boxxx for your first choice, then try DELL. But you could save yourself some money if you build it yourseld, unless of course, you have some kind of contact at HP where it would end up cheaper or the same as building your own.

Also, do some research on AMD's Opteron, I think they are the best choice now, best upgradeabillity and they are going to be arround for quite some time. but its up to you, do some research, there are plenty of threads about Opteron and Xeon prosesors here at CGTalk.

Oh, but if you really really really really want something from HP, look at their 23" (inch) LCD screen, it has nothing but good reviews!

hope some onme can tell you about those prosesors, and happy hunting!

Thanks for the info, I really want to just build it. I know it would be cheaper. The problem is I cant find the motherboards im looking for anywhere except buying a whole machine.

Im looking for either of these:

Intel(r) Server Board SE7525GP2
Intel® Xeon™ processor (800MHz FSB)
Intel® E7525 Chipset

Thunder i7525 (S2676ANRF)
Tyan Intel® Xeon™ processor (800MHz FSB)
Intel® E7525 Chipset

Thunder i7525 (S2676UANRF)
Tyan Intel® Xeon™ processor (800MHz FSB)
Intel® E7525 Chipset

To throw a little more spice in the mix you will need to specify whether the 2.8MHz CPU is a Northwood or a Prescott - given that it has 1MB cache I guess it is a Prescott.

When it says 533FSB this is referring to the power of the Front Side Bus - i.e. how fast power is being pumped through the CPU. 533MHz is old technology so you are better off with the 800FSB. Having an 800 MHZ FSB also means you can run fast DDR400 RAM synchronously with the FSB for better performance.

The latest Intel CPU is the Precott but at current speeds (around the 3 GHz range) it is no better (and sometimes slower) than the Northwood.

You will only be able to switch out the processors if the motherboard supports the higher speed - you'll have to ask HP that question.
