View Full Version : Vehicle: Toyota Supra
masterx3k 07-06-2004, 11:49 PM I have noticed there is a couple of these on here, which is why this will be my last car as I want to get into character modeling and make something really original.
This car took far longer then I had originally planned because I had to balance it with school work. Anyway, it's been a long time coming but it's finally done.
After it was done I worked on a composite picture. I took a picture from my parking lot at my house as well as made a pseudo hdri map (not as high res) for the car to reflect. I think it came out alright. Let me know what you guys think.
*EDIT: PICTURE UPDATED*

Very sweet.. seems like its missing somthing though maybe too clean or maybe some depth to the paint or a good shader but looks cool anyway

The detail you have put into this is phenomenal, the only i can see letting it down is the glass transparency.
It looks too foggy and blury in comparison to the rest of the body. imho
Nice alloys i want em !!

hi man...
i really like your rims...
your interior is also really cool....nice work....specially your seats...i like the leather texture.....good work man...keep it up....
did you use hdri..? i guess...

Thanks guys.
Yeah, the windows could have gotten a little messed up. I messed with them alot trying to make them work with the composite. I look at some more references.
In the first picture I used a pseudo hdri map. I say pseudo because it isn't nearly as detailed as a real hdri since I made it myself. So basically it's just a 360 degree picture with an .hdr extension.
The second is just white put in the reflection spot of the vray environment properties.
Oh and Jeremyi, can you be more specific on your suggestions. I'm not really understanding what you mean.

Very nice interior details :)
I agree with the suggestion to get a 'deeper' shader, this one is kinda blurry.
Nice work:thumbsup:

lacking depth...maybe a flatter color or something...

Well first of all. Nice modes. There are a tuncy bincy errors down and there but the overall feel is great. You need to tweak a lot the materials exept the one of the seats it is perfect :). The composite you showed is nice, the car is well placed on the pic but there seems to be a lot of other problems, it seems that you didnt get the light feel , yes the shadow is falling in the right direction but it must be harder at the edges. The reflections on the car are overbrighted. In the studio like renders there is such problems but in there i can live with them as a style fancy. Look at the back photo the other cars reflect the sky with the clouds, on your reflection it seem that the car caught all the sun. The glass is the other problem for me... it take much reflection and it looses its transperancy. The interior in the composite scene looks very bright, it should be very hard noticable like a silhuete or something, like on the other cars in the photo. The rims are nice but with them with this kind of light the only seen thing of the brakes should be their red calipers that i like. Well I overdone myself here, Keep working man .

Wow, very nice work, amazing details. I agree with the previous posters about the composit looking strange. Something about the interior through the glass looks really off...it's got a weird sort of blur, ya know? Only other thing I really noticed is that the glass on the tail lights looks kind of flat, but I'm not really sure about correcting this. I think it might just be the angle of the render. This is really good work though, I like the fact that you modeled the targa top too hehe. Good luck with the characters! (I'm just working on rigging my first one now, what a pain in the ass!)

Those rims rock. I have been working on some of my own, and they are a royal pain. Great job with everything. Your shading is dead on with everything I think.

you know, the only thing that gave away that it was a composite image involving your rendered supra (apart from you saying it was a composite image) was that the supra was unnaturally clean. =] apart from that, the fact that its the only car 'in' the parking lot (and the most expensive one, or maybe a second to the bmer) that doesnt have tinted windows. basically, what i could have said such fewer words, is good job on the render, and good job on the model.

this is great. i love the interior seats, they are almost perfect. somthing on the the body paint just doesnt seem real though. in your composite the colors of the supra are a little more vivid than the rest of the cars. but other than that this is great. keep it up. might be front page soon??
1 word mate: beautyfull !!!!!
really love these 3d cars and one day i will finishe one myself!
can't realy say what's bad or good, cause i'm a beginner at this 3d stuff, but i can say that this one is really good!!

Thanks for the comments guys.
I totally agree with the interior of the composite being too bright. My friend and I couldn't quite figure out if it was wrong or not. So I just posted this one to get some more opinions.
Regarding the shader you guys are talking about, you mean the exterior paint correct? I will play with it some more maybe adding a some deeper metal flake.
As far as the cleanliness goes, should I add some type of dirt to the paint or just add some sort of noise to the picture. I figured the biggest problem is the fact that the picture was not taken with a high powered camera so the fact that the supra was being rendered with alot higher resolution would give it away. I did make another composite image with some noise added in to make it blend a little better with the low resolution of the picture itself, but I forgot to upload it before I posted.
This is the one with added noise, it's very subtle and I know I still need to tweak the interior lighting so I'm going to be rerendering anyway. However, I'd like to get some opinions on whether or not this is what you had in mind. I think it fits a little better.

very nice :) I think it looks great :)
I didnt read everyones comments but the main thing that jumped out and grabbed me was some of the edges are TOO sharp.. Like the ones on the hood for the vents.. really sharp edges are ushaully a tell tale sign of 3D work. Just add some really small bevels to them to round them just a little and I think that would add a lot ;)
hope that helps

Here is a redone image. I would have liked to get this corrected in the work in progress section, but I guess not very many people look in there. I did get any replies after I posted that first render.
Any feedback at all is appreciated.
I redid the interior lighting, lessened the light on the car, sharpened the shadow and rounded off the hood vents.

Only have a minute or so but i think the windshield reflection is much better
theres still something wrong with the transparency of the right door window .
Also you fixed the overexposure .. nice update . :)

Real nice model!
Don't know if anyone else noticed but you have some nasty lumps happening. Look at the second pic you posted you can see the bumps yourself. Cars are glossy and machined so these things stick out imediately. You put a lot of detail in some things which work fine but you need to make your shape tight and flowing. A car door is a bite out of a single shape and thats not happening here.
Mostly its an approach and there are many tutorials that deal with this.
Great work hope to see more!

Hry there Master X! Finaly you finished this babe. What? You're going to leave car modeling? Oh... well! That's fine since I know that you'll model excellent characters. :D
Excellent details on the seats. I love them.

overall very nice but the alloys look paper thin and youv got some funny things happening where your panels are meeting up. ie the edge of the door.
its alot better than the one im working on though.

Thanks for the comments guys.
As far as the window. I don't know. It seems to look fine to me. It has the exact same reflection properties as the windshield only the refraction amount is set to 20%. Non-tinted windows on cars are 30%. Could just be the reflection.
As far as the lumps, I was dissappointed when I took those renders because I had never rendered the car with a straight white background so I never noticed them. I would like to fix them, but I have spent so much time as it is on this car that I just can't see it being worthwhile. I have since learned the techniques you were referring to since the body was done. (Since it took me so long to model the interior) so if I decide to do another car I will make sure I use it. I figure on this model I would have to repair alot of "dents". That could prove to be just as hard as remodeling it from scratch.
It may be the reflection on the rims, because they are the exact thickness of the actual rims.

Ok, I have decided I'm done completely with this car. I tried to fix some of the lumps to see how hard it would be and figured out that if I try to fix it by just moving vertices it will most likely get worse. I would have had to go farther down the mesh hierarchy to less vertices. Problem being, the way I modeled certain areas I can't do that. The area being the worst is the area just above the back side window. I played with that for a good hour trying to fix it with no luck on getting it to look any better. I figured to really fix it I would have to remodel it. I think that time would be better spent learning new techniques and using the things i have learned throughout modeling this to improve on my next models. In time I may come back and get everything just right on this car, but only time will tell. For now I will still take to ANY crits you all have to offer. I will take them all to heart and use them with my future modelling.
This is by no means a post to end this thread. If you have some suggestions still please let me know.
