View Full Version : Meshsmooth Messup!
=HaZZard= 07-06-2004, 07:59 AM Hiya.
Im Currently modeling a mech of some kind. ( hopefully i'll post a pic on the WIP forum ) And ive come across a problem with meshsmooth and splines. If i create a spline, say a bolt holder and apply an editPoly modifier and extrude it. When i add my meshsmooth the mesh puts faces in every direction it can and it doesn't look very pretty. Does any one know a way around or a way to fix this?
any help would be good, thanks!

kinda hard to understand what you're talkin about, maybe post a couple before/after pics?

It's probably because a mesh made from splines won't be made of nice quad faces. Mesh smooth only really works on quads. You can improve the situation by cutting up your mesh into more or less quad faces (some triangles or 5 sided polys here and there are OK, so long as there's a quad between them) before you try and meshsmooth it.

Not that I know of. If you find a way let me know too. ;) I tend to do that sort of thing for curved shapes too.
It might be quicker to extrude the spline with a really low number of steps in the splines (set the interpolation low before doing it). You don't need that much detail if you're going to meshsmooth it after. It might also be quicker to convert to an editable mesh, then you can select all those hidden edges and make them visible, then convert to a poly object, rather than spending a long time with create edge in poly mode straight away.

Yeh that sounds like a plan i'll give it a try. i tryed adding in the detail and it worked ( kinda but i was rushing ) so i'll give your outher suggestions a try. thanks again for your help. and if i find a better way i'll let you know. thanks.
