Maybe a place like this will get you started.

Polycount is also a good place.

Since you want to do this for games you probably want to learn about sub-D mesh modeling. 3d Studio Max has some pretty good starter tutorials. Go through the tubby tutorial. Learn about the polygon counter in your tools pane and start modeling some crude weapons first. Then look for UVW mapping tutorials and texturing tutorials.

Modifiers to learn- Edit Poly/Mesh, Unwrap UVW

Just remember that modeling is constant tweaking and practice, so be patient and make mistakes. If you want a time estimate I would say if you invest 8 hours into max you could get a pretty descent handgun model out of it.

Good luck
