View Full Version : Hitori Animation
toast 07-26-2002, 09:04 AM Hey all, thought I'd finally post some work in this section after lurking so long... I'm currently trying to get into the gaming industry and have shifted my focus towards low poly work. So this is one of the first things I've done, it's part 1 of a longer animation I planned out and I wanted to get some feedback on it:
Hitori Part One (http://digitaltoaster.org/images/hitori/hitori_final_divx.avi)
the anim is 1.8 megs and in DIVX, so I apologize if you can't play it (mainly Mac people)
The animation is basically two low poly guys I created fighting. I wanted to do more than just animation cycles so I made this scene just to get a feel for how it might look in a game. Anyway, if you're interested you can check out more at:
digitaltoaster.org/hitori.shtml
If you don't download the animation, please at least check the other link so you can see some stills. Thanks, and I'd love to get some good feedback/crit on the animation, characters, ... well everything I guess :)

Hi.
First off. REALLY good animation!! The action i superb. But the slow-mo part looks off. The gut that stands up, is too still (he doesnīt move at all) and the other gut is falling in a strange way. Itīs so far from the quality of the rest. You should skip it.
loved the action:thumbsup:

i think its great. the falling scene i would like to see do a kinda of three scene look, one repeated fast, one from the perspective of the guy getting owned ( behind him, like near the middle) and one slow mo like that, but starting about midslice. maybe a bit of a movement from the guy slicing. better yet, if before the dude fell he sheathed it....omg that would own. i know there is no sheath....but you know.
i think some sort of follow through could also big good, that type of move is not excuted without some momentum, and its not easy to stop. not matter how bad you are.
but man, its awsome. i would love to see it textured out, scene and all. i think that would be great. call it cliche, but i think a forest, or bamboo park type enviroment would be really bad ass.

Nice animation. But one thing that stands out to me is after he makes the kill, the enemy guy is falling and the shirtless man is completely still. If you added just a little movement in there to him it would make the whole thing feel more alive. Just a little twitch of the hands, bending of the knees, etc.
Other suggestions... Speed the run up a bit. Right now, it looks like he's leaned over and almost walking in.
You could probably tweak a few things about the enemy's fall, but it looks pretty good as is.
Overall, a really good job. Keep up the good work. And I hope some of my critique helps.

hey all, thanks for the great feedback and suggestions, I appreciate it! I'll def take a lot into account when I go back in to work on this.
I guess I should clarify something about this animation, seeing that everyone is kinda saying the same thing. The 'ending' for all intents and purposes isn't the actual ending to the piece. Since this is the first part of a larger anim, that scene, the slomo one corresponds to another scene that would probably make everything flow a lot nicer. But since I haven't finished that yet, I can see why people are having a problem with the current ending. Ah well :)
Ya it's kinda weird how it's intercut there, but I have to say that the reason why he's not moving after the kill is purely stylistic. Like I said, it'll work better with the next corresponding scene, but I guess you'll just have to take my word for it now until I up something new ;)
thanks again everyone. BTW, did anyone have any problem viewing the movie?

Hi
I have a suggestion on the last scene, guy falling & naked guy still, just try in tighter shot, waist up, make the falling guy fall in slowmo and at the same time pan/scroll it left and the naked guy stays still & pans/scrolls right, cut to your original shot when the falling guy is almost out of the screen to shwo him falling on the ground, if you fell like anything fancy cut to a shot with the camera at ground level looking up and rotate it 90 degrees to the left, this way the guy will fall towards the camera, you can show his face and put on it an agonizing expression and the naked guy will be still visible in the background (maybe off focus) the cut back to a medium shot of the naked guy and make him sheat the sword in a cool way turn around & walk away...
away very very cool animation:thumbsup:

I'd be really curious to see it with out the camera cuts. The movement is good, but I can't see all of it.
Oh, and the other thing, the guy with the axe would have fully lopped the swordsmans head off if he turned his back to him that early, none the less very cool stuff (especially the photographs!). :surprised

heh, I thought this thread had dissappeared from existence :)
thanks for the comments, I was considering putting a version up without camera cuts also, maybe I'll get around to it eventually...
