View Full Version : Problem With Modeling : Ugly Triangles

I have a problem. I am modeling a spaceship, and I ran into something I dont know how to fix. Im using 3ds max 5, and below are images of what the problem looks like. In the wire frame from the viewport, the surface looks nice and smooth, but when rendered, I get those nasty looking triangles showing up. I dont know if it might be because the points are not co-planar, but even if that is the problem, I dont know how to fix it. When I render it, I want it to look nice an smooth. How can I fix this? All help is much appreciated. Thanks.

well it can be fixed in 2 ways. first if its a model for a game, just flip the edges, and make sure it makes a wave patherne like this, /!\/!\, this is how i learned it, not sure if its right. other thing if you do subdivisions, it should go away.

Triangulating and manually flipping flipping the tris should help yes.
Try first playing around with the smoothing, if you apply enough (but not too much) if should wash those problems away. From what i can see in that render you dont even have enough smoothing to render the curves there.

You need to make all those polys on the top of your ship 1 smoothing group.
If you scroll down in your modify panel (in Polygon level) you will see a smoothing groups section. You can edit smoothing groups there.
Smoothing groups hide the edges of polygons giving the illusion of a continual surface. Sometimes when you are adding poly's the software by default creates un-smoothed polys.
