View Full Version : Crazy Degree Change
LT Fox Fire 07-02-2004, 02:59 AM When ever I try to change two or more degree angles, AM 2000 randomly adjusts the others. For example: when I have 40 X and 20 Y and 0 Z and I input 45 or any number to Z and the X and Y change. This also happens when I have one negative degree. Anyone else having this problem?

Nope.

Do you have "mirror mode" on? I honestly can't think of a situation that this has happened to me the way you describe it. I have forgotten that I had mirror mode turned on and have had unexpected things happen as a result.

Hello, again.
I just tried the following in an Action file, on version 10.5q.
I selected a bone, advanced ten frames, and typed in 40, 20, 45 in the X, Y, Z fields of the "Rotate" box inside the "Transform" box inside the "Object Properties" of a bone (in the Project Workspace). It worked perfectly.
I then cleared the Action, advanced ten frames, turned on the "Show Manipulator Properties" button, hit "R" to evoke the Rotate Manipulator, and then I tried to type in 40, 20, 45 in the X, Y, & Z fields of the onscreen Manipulator Properties thingie. No joy. I got the same problem that Foxfire just reported. Everytime I type in a value in one field, the other two values jump in a bizzare fashion.
I KNOW I've reported this bug, quite some time ago. Maybe it's been fixed by now? I haven't upgraded this year, so I don't know what v11 is like. For the time being, my workaround is to change rotation values in the Property Panel or the PWS. I wish there was keyboard shortcut for expanding disclosure triangles. Anybody know if there is?
Foxfire is using v8 and he's getting the same goofy trouble in the Property Panel. I rely on v8.5p+ mostly, and I *don't* have this problem in the Property Panel. And in v10.5q I only see the problem when I use the onscreen "Manipulator Properties" thingie. This sounds like a hardy little bug, one that resists extermination.
Foxfire: Is there any chance you can snag a more recent version of v8.0? The bug might be absent in a more recent iteration of the program. Here's a site with a stock of old versions of A:M 2000:

AM is trying to let you edit your angles in a way you can understand - but "under the hood" it's interpolating using quaternions which have X, Y, Z, and W rotations - which are really hard to get your mind around - you may be pushing up against gimbal lock, and AM is adjusting the angles underneath so that your object doesn't stop rotating on one of the axes.
You can go in to your Tools>options>Action> and change the interpolation to Euler or Vector and see if you have the same problem....
Qauternions are cool, but they cause their own set of problems....

I have Ver 9.5 and the latest patches for it. I wish there was a way to lock in a degree, that would help.

Yikes! I thought you had version 8.0. I thought AMv8.0 was AM 2000. Sorry for the confusion.
Man, that's interesting, what Joe said. I always thought there might be a connection between Quaternion Interpolations and this spasmatic input problem. But ... I guess I just dismissed the idea, because I thought it was too unlikely. I mean, why have a numerical input for rotation values if your numbers don't stick? I like Quaternion Interpolations, but I'd still like an opportunity to tell the computer exactly what it should do, from time to time.
It's odd that v8.5 should be free of this strange input behavior. It uses Quaternion Interpolations, too.
Come to think of it, though, I think jumpy rotational inputs used to be a problem with v7, too.
