There's been a tonne of talk about wacom tablets, so I went and bought one. I only bought the cheapy though. A graphire2 because I'm starving and I'd rather buy something that might improve my work instead of paying rent.:D And man! While I'm not going to post anything yet, I can sure as hell say this is what seperates the men from the boys. If you want to do nice 2d work on the computer you NEED this! The pressure sensitivity is awesome! It's like a pencil or pen or brush.

GET ONE NOW!

I didn´t find it too impressive.

told you so :)

OK, I love my Wacom (Intuos2 9x12) but does anyone else have this problem....every so often I'll be drawing and the brush size suddenly goes to the maximum, then goes back down again. Here's (http://users.bigpond.net.au/oracle/image.jpg) and example of how often it happen (I just kept drawing circles, trying to keep the pressure the same all the time)

I like my wacom ... really I do. But, for some reason I was expecting magical paintings (see KOryH's enchanted forest) to sprout forth from it. I'm finding out now that the tool does not make the picture ... you really have to know what you're doing also. :D

Wise words Kirt.
But hey, peactice makes perfect! Why do I keep saying that? :curious:

I also got one and I haven't regret it. It's like a magic wand that takes the form of all pencils and brushes.

Amen, Kirt.

Personally I think the whole computer is an amazing tool. And so is a Wacom. But not more than a tool.
If painting with your butt brings you the effect and the result you were after, then paint with ya butt I always say ;)

But that's just MHO ;)

Judas:
I have experienced that problem too, but it doesn´t happen that often to me.

What I don´t like witn the wacom is that I can´t spin around the picture like I do when i draw with pen and paper. It makes you break a few bones in the arm :)

See what I mean? It sucks!!
(the image that is)

Gamoron
07-25-2002, 06:06 PM
Very good point jeroentje! Actually I've got paintings done with my butt... ah forget that's for me and my girlfriend. Anyways, I hear ya. Just been screwing around with it for the last hour and the biggest issue is that it's going to take some getting use to, and I KNOW it's going to change the way my digital art looks. I normally used the airbrush, now it sucks and I'm switching to the paint and pencil tool. Sometimes it looks like ink, I'm going to have to define a whole new set of brushes.

Ivars I think that start looks great personally.

Cheers,

I have to agree with you on that one.
It's one of the few disadvantages indeed.
Here's my first ever painterthing with my (then) brand new Graphire2. I started on the right of the canvas and foundmyself with my head in a 90 degree turn after 30 min's.
(Pic's posted for the 3rd time. I know.)

But it's a cool tool.

Hello Ivar..could you go into a little more detail about why (A) "I didn´t find it too impressive" AND (B) "It sucks!!"
??? What kind of quality are you looking for ? Are you a traditional painter making a trasition to digital painting? ....

Ive been using a "Wacom" for about 8 years..no complaints...no problems...Dont know how anyone could ever use any thing elese. When I was younger I tried to use a Mouse to paint..what a joke

What we all need (Ivar youll like this) is a "LCD pen tablet"...Its a portable touch screen pen tablet and computer all built into one. I saw someone using one at the Museum last year..."Blown away"..thought it was a note book..but it wasnt.
Ive found a couple on the web(NOT!! the "Web Pads")..there kind exspensive.... $3,000 and up, And the size's are still kinda small 10- 17in, but well all have one of these in the next couple of years when the prices come down...but its something to look forward to....then well be able to move a drawing surface around...weeeeeee

Gamoron
07-25-2002, 07:39 PM
Oh man those drawing LCD screens. I need one.

It's tough getting use to the pressure I'm finding I am being really sketchy instead of controlled with pencil and paper.

Ive decided to pick up a wacom myself and stumbled onto this thread. about the not being able to rotate the picture, why not rotate the image ur workin on?

Gamoron
07-25-2002, 08:08 PM
better idea. Just learn to not need to rotate it. Cheers.:scream:
I love this I'm drawing again!

What the hell. Here's one of my 1st scribbles.

Ivars

DigDug:
I guess the thing was, I had too high expectations. I´ve wanted a wacom ever since I saw one (4-5 years ago) and then finally gor one, for free, from my new job:) Very exciting!!

Thought it would be just like drawing, only that the image would show up on the screen. But it was pretty far from that.

Inprecise, and painfull twisting my arm in strange positions, and the slippery surface on the board.... Found out later that you can put a paper on top of it, wich is a great idea.

Anyway. it doesn´t suck (I was refering to my painting there;) )
But everybody praises their wacom, and my frien was always bugging me "buy a wacom, buy a wacom....."

It´s good!
Just not that good.

Gamoron:
Nice scribble. Are you going to work on it some more, or are you just fooling around

AroundTheFur: take one of your paintings...rotate it a couple times...then try to realign it. Then you’ll notice that the anti-aliasing has changed, do it often enough your image will change over time.

Gamoron: I know every one has there own way of doing stuff….and you probably already know this stuff. but what I like to do when I feel like sketching with photo shop is…use paintbrush, double load the brush by using “color” and turn on “opacity”. And mess around with “angle” and “roundness”…when you double load your brush with two color’s try using 2 different bright colors(like complementary colors)…you’ll learn how to control by seeing the color change…. My 2 cents

Ivar: what ive allways done is, do my skecthing on paper scan and only color in photoshop

Thanks DigDug. I'm going to try your adice right now. And if I can't get it to work I'll post back.

edit: I don't get it. How do I double load my brush. Can you do a screenshot?

Cheers!

Kirt

I think what he means is ...

foreground color = red
background color = blue

The pressure you apply to the pen will dictate what percentage of each color is applied.

100% pressure = red
50% pressure = purple
1% pressure = blue (I almost typed in 0% pressure ... but then realized that's not right, hehehhe)

Gamoron
07-25-2002, 11:15 PM
Hmmm... I'll try it thanks Kirt.

DigDug
07-25-2002, 11:47 PM
Gamoron: Use the color option in the brush option menu
Thanks Kirt!

What I like about it is you can paint depth by just adding pressure Or you can fine tune how the line fades away...mess around with it...change up your (angle/roundness)brush head also...that will break things up and give you some interesting shape
using paintbrush with your wacom gives you a better brush tip....it looks a little more natural....uhhh..well as natural as a digital brush can get.....Then again if MORE realistic painting is what your looking for try painter....cant give you any tips threre..sorry

I have a trusty old (11x12 is it? I don't remember) Artz2 and I recently got a little intuos to hook up to my ibook ... I've been alternating conte, graphite, and my ibook (w/Painter) in my life drawing sessions ...

I love it .....

I'm saving up for a cintiq ... damn, gotta have it!!!

As far as lighttable like control ... I've been mulling this over as a suggestion to Adobe, but wouldn't it be great if you could grab a corner of your canvas with your pen and free-rotate it digitally? So every working window in Photoshop would have this option, plus a "snap to" that could bring it back to 0,0,0 ...

Just an idea ...

;)

My thoughts exactly, I just got my tablet and I've been rotating the canvas so much because I hate drawing horizontal lines, things just run much better for me on the verticle, I put this together pretty quickly

I've only had this thing for two days but I just started coloring with it and I can see that it will come in very handy indeed :)

i like it Kirt, looks lke it could be from a storyboard.

@DigDug: Cheers! I've got it underway. Nice effect. It'll take some brainstorming from me to understand the right to use it.

Do you guys wear gloves on your drawing hand? To prevent greasing?

Gamoron: When I'm drawing I just try to keep a clean work area. I'll use just a clean white sheet of paper/kleenex to keep my drawing hand off the page, and then make sure to exchange it for a new scrap every so often. I've found this works best so I'm not smudging my pencils/inks all over my page. I also at one point will scan in my pencil/ink drawing, and then print it and continue to draw on the printed page. That way I always have a stage in drawing to go back to if I'm working towards that perfect piece. Hope these tips help :)

(From Judas_Pilate) OK, I love my Wacom (Intuos2 9x12) but does anyone else have this problem....every so often I'll be drawing and the brush size suddenly goes to the maximum, then goes back down again.

I know exactly what you're talking about dude. It's a real pain. What I do know is open up the Wacom Tablet control window at the same time (this is where you set all the pen options). It has a little box to draw in to test pen sensitivity (Under the "Tip feel" tab). So, whenever that thing happens (the pen jumps to maximum pressure), just hit ctrl-Z and then doodle in that "test pen sensitivity" box. That corrects it. Still a pain in the ass, but better than trying to draw with that big brush.

Does anyone know what we're talking about? And is there a real way to fix it?

jeroentje
08-13-2002, 08:05 PM
Yes I do. But only in Painter, not in Photoshop.
I zoom in, I zoom out and it's gone. Not really a problem to me.

MonkeyBoy

yeah, only in Painter. Hmm.... Anyway, I'll try your method Jeroentje. Cheers.

it's me again.

try to take the pen away from the pad so it doesn't recognize any movement and after that paint as usual. the pressure should be corrected , now.

many people als forget to create their pen-behaviour in the painter options.

Ive had my wacom for almost 3 years now ( october 1999) but i didnt start painting with it until january 2002 lol =). LIke i opened the box in 1999 but i didnt know what to do with it. I saw cool artist doing nice things but i didnt know how to do them soo i put it away. THen i went to art college and in january i picked it back up and started fooling around with it and this was my FIRST wacom painting:

Wacoms are worth buying if you KNOW how to umm paint and draw. =)

This was made the other night. A friend of mine was real still as he was enthralled in Eternal Darkness so snuck in a sketch when he wasn't looking.

I haven't used painter in a loooong time. Now getting back into it its a little overwhelming with all the options. Seems I spend most of my time deciding which medium to use.

hey, i'm really new here, still finding my way around this site.

where i work i use a tablet sometimes, i think they pay for themselves. i work in canada, a 9x12 tablet typically goes for about $450(cnd), how does that compare with any of you guys in other parts of the world

sad
08-14-2002, 05:01 PM
the graphire2 is about 100 us$ here in germany. the intuos-a6 costs about 240 us$.

wacom is the number one tablet-supplier.

Radnor
08-16-2002, 03:53 PM
I do web design at work so I purchased an Intuos2 to use. I can't imagine working without one any more-- it's so much nicer and easier on my wrist than to use a traditional mouse, even for regular navigation.

But like others have mentioned it can go wacky sometimes. For instance, when I go to click on an icon in the quick launch bar the cursor jumps up somewhere in the middle of the screen then goes back to where I clicked. It moves all my icons to weird places! It also happens when I'm clicking in the other extreme corners. It's annoying as hell and I've tried everything to fix it. :)

I wouldnt call you stupid, you just havent actually tried turning the Wacom 90 deg. and then trying to use it. Its impossible for me to keep the motion of my hand and what Im actually seeing on the screen, the same.

Remember, you can use a ruler, french curve, compass (if you make one) or any other drawing tool you want. I only have the 6X8 inch Intous tablet, about a year and a half now, I cant see how I would work without it.

Much like an earlier post by plouffe, I havent been using my tablet for as long as I have had it. I still prefer paper. But I did do the CO-OP project, posted by Kirt, entirely on the Wacom...
