Interesting synopsis. I haven't read the book. but anything that has to do with Mars can't be bad at all!

Here is my attempt, a 15min chalk drawing with photo manipulation done on photshop/15min.

I imagine that a true Sage would be a stranger in this world(and this world is strange:see springer show), so I tried for that feel with this image.

"Stranger in a strange land" is a fantastic book, had me gripped from the first page to the last.
How to sketch it though? Going to require some thought.

It appears as if not many people have read this book (myself included). That doesn't have to be a bad thing...it makes for many different interpretations of the title. Here's mine, I look forward to seeing the rest.

OK, I read the synopsis of the book after I did my sketch, so you'll see that it has nothing to do with the book. Just my take on the feeling of being alone in an unknown environment.

I tried to do it as if was a book cover, enjoyed this topic, needs more work but hey its just a sketch. Check this link (http://members.tripod.com/~v_m_smith/) I came across, has a few of the original book covers done for it. Interesting to see how they change over the decades.

Feels like college all over again. Read the Sparkynotes then cobbled this together:

I guess it's the ascension of Christ as witnessed by Keith Haring.
Actually, I just didn't want to paint all the soldiers and hippies that I was planning on putting in there. About an hour in Photoshop.

Being raised on classic SF, I've read the book and love it. Regardless, I decided to go with this unspecific reflection on the title.

This is Bono from U2, but I think I was subconsciously inspired by that A-ha video "Take on Me"! :)

Anyway, I'm not overly happy with this but I have been lurking a lot in here and started a few sketches that I never posted, so I wanted to just get one in here to get me kick started on the way to doing more! (happy or not!)

About an hour and a half in Photoshop with Wacom. Took that long cause I coloured the whole thing then decided to delete out all colour other than Bono.

http://www.confectionerypalace.co.nz/dion/bono2.jpg

3 reasons for it:

1) U2 have a song called Stranger in a Strange Land (On the October album)

2) The video still ref I used was from U2's concert at Red Rocks in Colorado in 1983. That was pretty much when they made it big and moved to the U.S. so they were really strangers in a strange land.

3) I had the thought of a how an up and coming band suddenly playing to these huge audiences must feel very much like they are SIASL! Hence the isolation of Bono from his surroundings.

This forum has been really inspiring me to create and improve. Thanks everyone!

(and it's great to see so many of my buddys from "the forum we can't talk about" in here!!!)

Ohw, was the title from a book then? O_o
I'm glad I didn't read it, because then i probably ended up thinking too much of the book and not getting any original ideas :)

Well, mine here, a tourist who's very very lost...
Uniball pen, textures and effects in photoshop, about an hour. Yup, I too fell for the "using a texture to fill up your drawing a bit" effect. :P
What i did is kinda emulating working on textured paper with black/white paint :)

Bonzo
07-01-2004, 02:06 PM
yes, jawine, you did exactly that. almost like grayscale watercolor, excellent job! i think i'll try that for my next sketch.

there are some nice ones guys, keep it up.

unfortunately, i haven't been able to upload mine to my server, so you will all have to wait..

i really like, squee, goro, jiasaer, kieronh, TeoM, Cyanid, kalas84, powerchild, agentJ, knivel, goblin king, drawMonger,

nice, clean sketch biped; LEEBLEEB, a more dramatic pose would suit this sketch; nice idea stephan.s; Dirj, a little more roundedness to the cup/pencil holder would have been awesome. I like the way the cord is just lieing there, waiting its turn :)

our level of commitiment is really showing these days. unlike me who hasn't posted in a couple of days.. eek

jawine - Great linework and composition. Quite a different style from what you've posted in the past. Sketch reminds me of Gulliver's Travels.

nilk narf and Goblin King - Funny that you both went off on the same tangent. Nice work from both o' y'all.

CBAS - I don't think you broke any rules. Mine owes a bit to Renaissance paintings of the Ascension (the main character is apparently a Christ figure).

Biped - Nekkid blue aliens in purple party hats? Who's the "stranger" here? Love the farmer's expression.

Cool stuff!

Well, this is a tad late; a typical newb mistake... but not only that, it has to moderated as well [with an upward limit of 24 hours, as you all will know]; so apologies to all for being, and the reprocussions of being a newbie. Still, this was fun, as was my gratuitous use of a forgein toungue. Kept to the title though.
As for the image, I spent a while with a larger background depicting a blue shoreline. Had the photo reference all lined up of some rather glorious cliffs and everything, but I couldn't get it to look right so gave up and shrunk the focus onto our friend. May try doing a full of this one, it was quite fun.
