hey,

does anyone know where the z-channel in rendering for the particles has gone?

i know i used it with maya 3.0 but maya 4.01 and 4.02 seem not to render a z-buffer for software render particles?

hmm, that's curious. if i switch on Depth in the output settings of the cam i get one, but with no informations in it. and if i switch it off (and i have the z-channel switched on in the Render Globals) i don't get one.

thatīs exactely what i get.

a z-channel gets rendered, but it is pure black (fchek shows me the upper and lower limit as the same value..)

i just checked with maya 3.0: all fine with z-channel.

i hate it when that happens..

yes the same here for me :) even if i switch on the depth of field and set the distance right.

trying to force the help files to tell me why right at the moment :thumbsup:

Not long time ago I was trying to get some z-buffer info out of Maya too, it was from a simple polygon mesh and I was trying to get it from the hw render buffer, and no matter what I did, never got the actual zbuffer image rendered, always showed up as pitch black :hmm:

here is the answer from alias bug center:


To improve the default behaviour of Paint Effects renders,
the default Camera OutputSettings->DepthType was changed from
"Closest Visible Depth" to "Furthest Visible Depth". However, this
means that by default, particles will not appear in the Z-depth..

To get Z-depth on your particles, you can switch DepthType back
to "Closest Visible Depth". You should see the Z-depth information
again (ie. with a fcheck -Z)

but to be honest: that does not work either..
i told them so. maybe they come back with it

finally the solution(...) from bug report center:



You are correct.. my bad. I was testing the workaround in our
internal cut of 4.5. (it is fixed in that version). I tested it back in
4.0.1
and you are correct, even with Closest, there is no Z-depth in 4.0.x.

Sorry about the confusion..

4.5 should be going out very soon.. first customer ship should be
early fall (before end of Sept). Hopefully you are able to render
them back in 3.0 in the interim? (I know that must be a major pain..)


naja.. back to 3.0 then :)
