View Full Version : paint FX growth timing

hey there,

i have the following problem with growing a tree in paint fx:

i want to use the (textured) birch tree and let it grow over time (i need a whole forrest later).

but when i let it grow, the speed of the tree itself growing and the speed of the texture moving along the stem dont match. the speed of the texture is much faster than the growing of the tree itself.
i have to keep a quite fast timing for the growing.

to get the tree grow to its full size i need to set the flow speed value to a quite high value, which increases the wrong effect.

is there a way to control the growth and the texture flow seperately or at least have them match?

cheers & thanx

alexx

alexx, which birch did you exactly choose ? :) i have so many here :)

birchBlowingLight for example.
but i guess every tree with a textured stem will behave the same

i'm not 100% sure but under tubes-length mapping you can switch between length and maxlength for the material channels

at least it looks like and the help doesn't say anything to that.

i'm right now rendering the two variants in a short anim. so after that finished i probably can tell more if that makes sense :hmm:

maybe write duncan directly an email :)

--==edit==--

hoffe das bringt was in der richtung :hmm: paintfx is eigentlich n rotes tuch für mich

no doesn't change it but i found something else

look for Tex Uniformity in the texture settings. i guess it can control the spee of texturing. at least i hope

"The setting is used only when the Map Method is set to 2D. If Tex Uniformity is 0, the textures are stretched along the path based on how quickly the different parts of the path were drawn (or where the stroke path curve CVs are). If Tex Uniformity is 1, the texture is mapped evenly along the path."

thanxs svenip for investigating. but that does not seem to help either.

hmm.. what a pitty..

just thinking on us feet here, but if you got the animation to match at fast rate you mentioned. Could you not just slow down the actual frames maya renders?
in your render globals, set your start and end frame accordingly and the edit the 'by frame' option to something like every 0.1 frame?

not sure if it will work but maybe worth a quick render test?

since the texture anim rate does not match with the growth rate of the tree itself, rendering extra frames wont help unfortunately

Select the stroke and type:
freezeBrushTexture

This creates an expression on the texture u offset that counteracts the effect of flow animation.

we will never know any mel command which exist as a little secret in maya and can help so much

i think i have to look into the scripts folder and open up each one, that i get an idea what else can be done with maya :applause:

hehe! we've got maya unlimited, maya complete and it appears we now have
'maya-not-quite-complete-cos-secret-folder-of-tek-tricks-haven't-been-turned-into-handy-UI-menus'

then we'll have

'maya-we've-hidden-mentalray-and-renderman-in-folders-in-your-icons-directory'

to be shortly updated with

'maya-makes-you-all-the-coffee-you'll-ever-need-at-the-press-of-a-button'
which undboubtedly microsoft will eventually make a button for on newer keyboards

oh, the possibilities!
