most likely you will need an upgrade as it was needed for Dynamics, BodyPaint and Pyrocluster during the change from R7 to R8

This is a bummer, just like I feared.
Well, here goes the modular system. Everytime the basic module gets upgraded, you need to upgrade all your modules with it.
Makes things more expensive instead of cheaper.
Whatever it will be, it will have to outbalance 8.5 plus MeshSurgery plus XFrog plus several plugins by far. And that means a lot more than, say, n-gons.
I don't like this at all.
The real question is, if you have to pay for all of the upgrades... :)

True. I reacted too quickly and from a negative point of view.
Apologies.

The question, however, remains will we have to pay to update modules. If this is under nda (and i dont think it should be) then i guess we wont know for a while but i surely hope you dont have to pay that would realy defeat modular system. Unless maxon updates modules and then you can do a free upgrade to 8.5 compatible or pay for the better module. (like dynamics adding fluid and better cloth) just my 2 cents.
If this is under nda
Hi,
this has nothing to do with NDA. Prices and terms of sales for a product are handled by management and sales, not by me or the Betatesters ;)
Also you won't find any information on something like this before you see official information on the product itself.

its srek saying this isn't his jusrisdiction. Thats up to product managers marketing and the likes. No tester is going to know this thats for sure. The only people who would/could say anythig are the ones who won't say anything till a product is announced.
Honestly you guys please read the Regarding R9 threds sticky before any more R9 posts. Its not that they wil be closed (unless theirs issues or fighting, but seriously, you put maxon employees and beta testers on the spot when you know full well they can't say anything. Just Sit back be patient andworry about learning *.5 to its full capability before worrying about What R9 might have or do. Honestly, what happens if fluid isn't added to R9? Just going to complain on the forums and then post about when is it going to be in R10? Why not learn the workarounds that already exist for such things?
