I have started modelling an anime robot, as an excercise to improve my poly modelling skills. Can anyone give me some tips on methods of modeling with polygons and meshsmooth. I am basically struggling to get to grips with how edges and vertexes affect the meshsmooth modifier. I have completed the base of the foot, but find the edges too smooth. How do I make them slightly mor defined, yet not very sharp?

You can insert additional edges near the ones you want to look more defined.
Or you can use the crease feature in the Mesh Smooth Modifier or the Edit Edges section of your Editable Poly.

Probably an easier way is to chamfer the edges that you want to me more defined. Use a small number, say 0.3 or less. This will ensure that your object's edges are still smoothed but have a little more definition. Hope this helps!

chamfer is quick and easy, but it sometimes conflicts with surrounding vertices, resulting in non-quad polys, if you're not careful, easy to fix, but you get more control if you cut yourself.
