If you have Maya 6 you can load .wav files by using the Trax Editor.

Window > Animation Editors > Trax Editor

Once the sound file is loaded, you can then right click on the Timeline (not in the Trax Editor, just in the main Maya window) and go to Sound, then choose the sound you imported.

If you have Maya 5 or earlier I think you just do it by using the right click meny on the Timeline.......or maybe though File > Import?

I can't remember!

Let us not forget you can drag and drop it into the maya window. Then you just have to rt-click the timeline and choose it from your list of sounds.
