This seems like it should be a simple question.
How do you render 16bit images from mental ray? I understand how with the Maya renderer, but I can't find anything in Mental Ray.

I solved my own problem.

Sounds interesting, please tell us (me).

In the render globals-
Your image format must be one that is capable of 16 bit. Something like RLA, TIFF, SGI, and I think IFF. Under the Mental Ray tab find the Framebuffer Attributes section. Here you can change from an RGBA 4x8bit, to say RGBA 4x16bit, or even 32bit. I haven't yet figured out what the RGBE does.
Anyway hope this helps you. It took me forever to figure this out, but i'm kinda slow sometimes.... :)

from the docs :

mental ray 3.1 also supports the RGBE high dynamic range color data format. Its stores RGB colors (no alpha) as floating-point values with an 8-bit mantissa and an 8-bit shared exponent.
