I had this problem before, solve it and I have it again, and you can kill me but I can't remember what I have done to solve it.
For example, simple poly plane with default lambert. Poly sphere with blin mat., and one big sphere for HDRI image - lamber, HDRI connected to the color and ambient. And yes, default light is off.
Result, veeeeeeery bright image. Get some results only when lower color gain for the hdri file almost all the way down. What did I miss?
Help?

LAmrUG has this on their site regarding Maya 6:

"FG effect in Maya 5 too extreme for you? Bart has a note on why Irradiance Color should be set to .318 .318 .318 with Final Gathering (FG) in Maya 5. Note that this has been addressed in Maya 6."
