Hi everyone, just thought I'd post a video tutorial I've recently made about creating a tornado particle system which interacts with a procedural town, destroying the houses as it goes through. Basically an interaction between 2 systems.

The url is:
http://www.flatface.net/~scorp007/temp/tornado_tut_max6.avi
It's about 33mb. You need the DivX 5.1.1 codec to view it, which you can get from http://www.divx.com

Enjoy ;)

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the reliability of that server, so if anyone has a better place to upload let me know.

I also built on to that system and improved it significantly. You can get the more sofisticated max file below:
http://www.flatface.net/~scorp007/temp/tornado_test03.max

And the rendered preview:
http://www.flatface.net/~scorp007/temp/pflow_tornado2.avi

*EDIT* I uploaded the max file to the PFlow uploader at: http://frodo.hiof.no/~deetee/pfupload/index.php
The file is tornado_pflow_01.max (http://frodo.hiof.no/~deetee/pfupload/index.php?act=view&file=dG9ybmFkb19wZmxvd18wMS5tYXg=)

ncpiment, Hi and thanks for the watching the tut. Did you actually manage to download it off that server? Or did you just get the max file? Either way, glad you enjoyed it.
About me making more pflow tuts, I guess I might if I can think of something to do them on that hasn't already been done 100 times :).

Hi,

I downloaded the video from the server, it worked fine.

About more tutorials, im new to PFlow is there any chance that you can make a tutorial explaining how you setup files on the particle viewer or describe the how each even work.

Thanks,

Nelson

ncpiment, well, not to sound rude, but the best way to find out what each operator/test/etc does is by checking the user reference, that is after all what it is there for, and it would seem unnecessary to repeat all of that. 3ds max also comes with some Pflow tutorials, starting at an introductory level, so you should have a go at those to get on some solid ground with pflow.
I may well make other tutorials on pflow and similar subjects but they will tend to be more advanced than just explaining what each operator does in a generic sense, but rather applying it to a certain problem.

Hi, will do that then, thanks.

Advance tutorials would be really cool.

I noticed that the demo is very similar in description to a SIGGRAPH 2004 workshop that is slated to be conducted. Scorpion, are you by chance the same person doing that workshop, or is this an amazing coincidence?

Great job on the tutorial, BTW - wonderful!

Thanks for the feedback :)
Avian, no, I'm not actually related to SIG2k4 in any way :) I'd love to attend though.
amckay, thanks, great to see your reply :)

Also, I just thought I should mention, the max file attached is actually far better than what the tutorial covers, so in case you havent had a look at it yet, you should. The tutorial didnt cover how to make the houses fall back down and smash, and had some minor flaws in it. Also, the max file's tornado particles themselves look much better animation-wise.

The tutorial is pretty good, but how would you add a material to those particles? I've been messing with it and I can't get it to render anything more than just tiny dots. You mentioned using afterburn. Any way you could include a quick tutorial for that?

I don't spose anyone has a mirror for all these old files? I'd like to take a look at how they were constructed and the tutorial itself.

Seb, not really much of an immediate help, but you might want to look at picking up Pete Draper's "Deconstructing the Elements" book from Amazon. Truly one of the best tutorial books on Max I have ever purchased and a great tornado tut with all the files, reference photos etc. Delivered from Amazon it is half price compared to buying it in Australia.

Hi, didn't think I'd see my old thread resurrected after all this time :)
I'm 'fraid I don't have those files any longer either, sorry :(
But, I might re-make a written tutorial about that topic again, that way its more badwidth friendly, as vid tuts are a bi**h to host.

Thanks for the interest :)

BTW - Pete Draper is definately a far more skilled individual than myself ;), so his book would definately help you :)

Thanks for the replies guys. Would you believe 20 minutes after I posted this I found a buyable copy of just the twister tutorial which was written by Pete Draper for Computer Arts. Only cost 99 pence so around $5AU including conversion fee. Bargain I say :)

Nice one! Still, I really would consider picking up the book for AUD$50. I don't think I have met/heard of anyone not say it's the best Max book out there.
