I have been trying to use Maya to create 3D logo's for various broadcast design projects. I find that taking a Illustrator logo and extruding and putting a bevel on it is a very labor intensive task in Maya. For example in Cinema4D you can easily import a logo and do the extrude and bevel in one step, and have a very cleanly built model. This can then be animated and rendered in a couple hours. Were as in Maya just cleaning up the AI data and extruding and beveling can take a better part of the day. In broadcast things can change quickly and having to start all over can make using Maya a very unaffective program to use. Am I doing something wrong in Maya for it to be taking this long, or is there a quicker way?

Have you tried ZaxWerks Invigorator for Maya...?!?

This was the secret weapon for broadcast graphics with ElectricImage 'back in the day'...

I think it is about US$1000, but if it works for you, and saves time/frustration, then it just might be worth it!

i've noticed the samething in max R4 as well. maya doesnt seem too accomodating when it comes to importing ai files either.

my solution is to trace over it maya (nurbs curve). it gives me a cleaner file and final piece. i know this may sound tedious but u wont regret it when its done.

I agree with Raven.

I do a lot of Broadcast work with Maya, and its MUCH easier to just trace over the original logo (Use EZ curve...free from highend3d.com) and use that as the base for my bevel.

The time it takes is actually nothing compaired to the time it would take you to fix the original AI files.

have you tried the extrude/bevel plugin available for free on the alias website?
