View Full Version : Are DGS material shaders Faster?

After messing around a little with texture files, and test rendering, i found that leaving the material shader slot empty within the surface group node's Mental Ray section, is TWICE as long in render time as when i add a DGS shader, and drop the texture file into the diffuse slot. Believe me, im not complaining, I'm just wondering why that is.
I also notice that adding a physical light to my lights, the render time is quite faster as well, so, maybe, when i add the DGS material shader, and connect it to the lights, that have physical lights attatched to them, this is the reason the dgs shaders make my render times faster?
any explination?

In general (but maybe not allways true), mental ray base shaders renders faster than Maya shaders, because these are simplier. These shaders don't have too many options/parametes to evaluate, and coded as simple as posible. This is true for material shaders, light shaders, texture shaders etc. So, whenever the level of control mr base shaders give is enough, it is good idea to use these.

Just my 2 cents.
