Okay, not really, it's for a companies logo so it has to be stylized, the shape is similar to a Harley engine despite the fact that if you looks at where all the pipes are going on my model, it clearly could never function as an engine. Anyway, I'm looking for aesthetic based critiques, how's the materials looking, how the lighting etc... thanks guys. It's a bit of a yellow tint, frankly only cause I always see chrome thats more on the blueish side and I just wanted a change.http://www.pulpandfiber.com/lorne/Mad%20Engine/Final%20Chrome.jpgUpdated, now there's flames and crazy pipes! It is for a company called Mad Engine afterall.

Very nice piece of work: detailed, realistic and believable. It's also well lit and set in its environment.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the bike ;)

Why is the picture so big?

Hate to disappoint, but the project was only an engine :( it's for some company called Mad Engine, no clue who they are or what they do though...

Why is the picture so big?
Cause I can. hehe but seriously though, I just like to render things big, I render them while I sleep over the night anyway, so I may as well use the time efficiently and have a nice big render to work with when I wake up the next day, though come to think of it I should have cropped the image.

Just to add something though, I've found out the real secret to rendering chrome. I render the image with all the proper materials assigned to each part. Then you render the scene with just the default lambert shader applied to everything. Do some photoshopping to the labert render so it looks nice and everything (here's an older lambert render I did to give an example of the amount of color etc to aim for) then bring the chrome render into photoshop and put the lambert render on top of it, set the lambert's layer to around 40% opacity and turn the blending mode to soft light. Later on I duplicate the lambert layer, apply a curve adjustment to it so it becomes very dark, then, invert the layer and once again set it to soft light but at around 20 - 30 opacity. The amount of depth that it adds to the chrome is amazing. Once I get back home I'll post shots with and without the treatment to compare.

Here's the old lambert render after a little photoshop work: Try to keep most of the colors from the render, don't desaturate too much, these yellows and blues will give the chrome more character.

nice render. I only see one problem. The pipes come from the cylinder head sidewall. You have them coming from the crankcase. I looked up some refs on google, but none really show what I am talking about.

I can dig deeper and find them, but I need some sleep first. I will try to post some up later. Take a look at orange county choppers site. they have some good pics that show the postion of the exhaust manifold.

No you're completely right, I think I wrote, or at least meant to write in ym initian explanation that this thing isn't close to accurate. I just have the pipes coming out the side so that they can go straight across and the logo can be written above or below them.

Hey, okay here's the comparison image: Top is lambert obviously, second is the raw chrome render from Maya, third is the final image with layers of the lambert render mixed in with various adjustments applied to everything. Should I maybe make a tutorial or is it not worth it? I like the way this technique turns out anyway, but maybe others find it a little bit too surreal.

very nice render! and good technique imo...it adds some shading detail back in that is otherwise lost on the chrome shader alone

thumbs up!

I think the cylinders look to small particularily at the bottom, otherwise very nice.

Here's the wire of the engine, it's done in Maya 6 and it's subdivision surfaces, oh, except the logo on the front, it is Nurbs. I'm working on the chrome tutorial, gimme a little while, work is crazy.http://www.pulpandfiber.com/lorne/Mad%20Engine/Final%20Lambert.jpg
