View Full Version : global illumination doesnt do ray trace shadow

When you do use a global illumination setting, it is supposed that the photons are doing what your raytracer is doing normally with transparent materials. Otherwise it wouldn't be physically correct. So switch on caustics if transparent objects are present in your GI scene and adjust photon count and energy of the light(s) that will cast the shadow. That should normally do it. However, there is a switch in the render globals in the caustics/global illlumination settings that overrides the physically correct behaviour and gives you the usual ray traced shadows. It's name is "Direct illumination shadow effects" in Maya 6. I don't remember the exact name of the switch in Maya 5 (must be ages ago...) but it was at the same position in render globals.

Yep, you have less than 30 postings (like myself) so you will have to link to somewhere else. I'm using an italian provider, supereva.it, that is free and allows linking from other sites. Obviously, it's all in italian so you might look for another solution ...
