I'm a starter 3dsm modeler and I'd like to find out more about meshsmooth modifier. I've found many tutorials where it's stated that meshmooth does not 'like' triangular polygons. Notice the example:

That's how I'd make the marked part of the hood, as you can see, I'd should make a triangle, it seems absolutely neccessary there. Do I really have to avoid triangles in order for meshsmooth to work correctly? If yes, then how do I do that (let's say, according to the example given)? What would go wrong if I made a mesh of mixed type polygons (triangular and rectangular) and applied meshsmooth?

meshmooth loves quads, but once in a while you can't get away without a triangle. So use a triangle, just as less as possible.

you don't need to avoid them completely... beeing fanatic about it is not good also.. :) but quads give smoothest surface... where you have non quad faces surface is prone to 'pinched' effect... also not good for areas of high deformation on characters (generally speaking...)

in this case i would make that triangle quad also... just with very close vertices on the end... so edges can 'flow'... if you take closer look on the picture you attached you'll notice that it is the same way on the car....

Not sure how it would smooth with meshsmooth, but if you really want to get rid of triangles, there are ways. Note that the triangle is actually a quad now, it's just got two edges in line with each other.
