Okay since I'm not getting a very good response with this project at my Maya Shader Discussion Site (http://www.deepwaterstudios.com/maya/) I going to try to see what kind of help I can get here. Here's the challenge:

Can you make a shader for mental ray in Maya that simulates human skin realistically without the use of a plug-in?

Rules:
1. It must work on all platforms. (PC, Mac, Linux, etc)
2. It must properly simulate the properties of human skin.

I have compiled a lot of information on the properties of human skin on my Maya Shader Discussion Site (http://www.deepwaterstudios.com/maya/) that may help in your research.

Good luck to all!

Here is my entry, it's not much but it's all I got at this point.

Please use the model and scene in this file (http://www.deepwaterstudios.com/maya/downloads/skinshaders/tocpe/TocpeSkinv0.15.zip) to create your shader. That way we're all using the same model and comparisons in each others progress can be made.

Download Zipped scene file (890K) here (http://www.deepwaterstudios.com/maya/downloads/skinshaders/tocpe/TocpeSkinv0.15.zip)

I hope that by restricting the use of plugins in this great challenge you dont mean no using some of mental ray shaders for subsurface scattering?
Goal is to make the best shader possible, using all means neccesary as long
as those things are available to everybody.

It's perfectly fine to use mr shaders, in fact it'll probably have to be done that way.
