Hello everyone :)

I'm working on a still life scene and could use some critique - and ideas. The main goal is getting it as photorealistic as possible. Could use some suggestions on adding new stuff to the scene as it is a bit too simple right now - and of course critques on about everything, especially the rendering.

note: The apple is supposed to look dried out :)

Thanks! :D

Software used:
3dsmax 6 and fRender-stage 1

Hey.

The ground looks great, really nice texture.
If I dare few comments, here's what I'd say :
-Textures : you should texture the pipes, and get them dirtier in the right places. The apple texture looks real, but we're too far from it to see clearly if it's dried.
-Lighting : try a "bigger" shadows pattern, that is, bigger lit spots, and bigger shadow spots. And manage to get the apple with it's far side lit and front side in the shadows.
-Camera placing : Arg! Rule n° ONE : never set your subject in the middle of your picture ! You can, for example, lower your camera so a bigger part of the wall shows up, and move the apple to the left and closer. (and get a apple on a plate and let it dry, so you can observe the way it's skin react if you need to make a new texture).
-Stroy telling : there's a good atmosphere in your pic, but what's the story behind ? what's the feeling you want the observer to feel when he looks at it ? Just ask yourself thoses question, and keep the answer in mind for whatever you add or modify, and i'll be five star !

Keep up the good work !

@Waugh :D Really great crits man! Thanks alot. For the next update I'll make the pipes more dirty. I've tried to get a closer camera angel on the apple - but I didn't really like it, so I'll properly change the maps so the apple (now apples) will look more fresh and shiny. The shadow pattern will also get bigger spots.

Here's the current update:

Made some more apples and a bag + a little story - they have been dropped from a bag and now lies in the slumber. Don't really know if it shows - you tell me :)
Added a wasted paper.

note: the render is not as sharp as the first because of lower AA when rendering - the rendertime kills.

Here's a post edit in Photoshop to get a moonlight lightning instead:

Hello! Nice, looks much better like this.
A few points :
- The rust on the pipes : i drew the places where you should add some.
-The piece of paper : just get a sheet of paper, wrap it nervously, feed your neighbour's dog with it, get it back, let it a few days outside, and observe how it looks now.
-Same for the paper bag : right now it looks like a brown fabric bag, soft. Craft paper has sharp angles where's it's been bent. The worst exercice my students had to go through was to model a crushed soda can, in one day. The bag is the same, but maybe a little bit more difficult ;)

And i like the apples, but they look old. Is that what you want ?

And yeah, globally, i would contrast light full throttle, then add a little ambient to raise the dark levels, and then, in post, smartly blur the high levels to give a dreamlike touch to the scene. Just an idea.

Hang on, and keep on the good work !
