Im making a scene and making the forground and sky look real isnt hard. My problem is how do i make hills and mountains look real.

I have 3 hills that make up the background scenery of my animation and i am having great trouble making them look photo real. I dont see covering them in grass as doable becuase of the amazing amount of processinr power needed. Ive tired a flat texture with bump maps but it just looks like that..a texture. It has none of the vegitation and rock look to it.

Has anyone got any good hints for making very realistic backround hills in max.

Thanx

I don't know if it will help you, but have a look at that tutorial :

You answered your own question: "it has none of the vegetation and rock look to it".

What you are probably missing is the detail required to give a sense of scale. Huge objects, like mountains, have lots of tiny details that tell us it is a large object. If you are applying a texture made for a small rock, it will make your mountain look like a small rock. In science-fiction movies, they put lots of small lights and doo-dads on the big ships to make them look big (even though they are just models). You need a texture with lots of tiny details.

You should post an image of what you are working on. You will get more comments on an image than a rough description.

Yeah when i posted that post i hadnt completed the composition of the scene so i didnt have much to post.

Here is the image, ive just added a basic colour to the 3 hills for this thread.

Alexander that does look helpful thank you.. ill try it. And I agree Ryan its all about detail. BTW this is very much WIP.

I will work on it some more later and post an update.
