zsutton 06-21-2004, 12:43 PM The other day my roommate and i got to talking about how we would like to re-do FF7..We both love the game a lot and would like to try our best to reproduce the game...Nothing to show yet really..We have a concept artist working on chars...if anyone is interested in trying to help us in our quest or have any suggestions for the game post here..
We have on our team:
1 concept artist
1 Graphics artist
1 Programmer
We could use any position and it would be great to see some more concept artists join us. Anything else u wanna know just ask..

hi!
what you want to do is a re-make (same chars etc...) or just a new game with similar background/gameplay?

We want to keep the same story line, and keep the same charachters. We will be adding new charachters, new quests, new weapons, new items, new locations,(same basic map though), new gameplay elements, new suprises, and of course much improved graphics.
So we will try to re-make, and try to improve upon what we believe to be the greatest RPG ever.

Re: {SqE}ZoSo.
Well, I'm going to give this advice - don't try to remake FF7. Seriously - you've taken on a HUGE burden. Don't underestimate the amount of effort that went into the creation of this game...surely you have completed it, yet? Read the credit roll?
Still, I believe that if you are seasoned programmers - you can quite comfortably make a "re-visit" to the wonderful world of FF7. By focusing on file-loading and level-editing tools - you should do alright. I for one will play a game that carry's on from where the last cutscene left off!
Start small & simple and your project will flourish. But trust me on this - FF7 is a VAST game. Don't bite off more than you can chew.
Good Luck!

What Boone said.
A game of that magnitude is an enormous undertaking.
By way of reference this game, Feeding Frenzy (http://games.real.com/game.php?gameid=ABD17F44-1E7A-11B2-A563-00D0B7142009&pageid=index-topdl&src=rahome030312_1&mode=spnav), took 4 professional developers almost 5 months to complete.
Start small and simple. Otherwise you're just setting yourself up for frustration and failure.

to that i say impossible. i really dont want to discourage you guys, but such a project is unimaginable. not only did the original team have more ppl (was is almost 100?) but the staff was at the time the best of the best... each seasoned programmers (or whatever role they played) for many years as professionals. even even so, it took a few years to make.
however, i know u must understand what you are getting yourselves into, and wish you luck, though success may be bleak. warnings aside, good luck. :).

man u guys have to look at how cool this could be. I dont care if this will take us 30 years to complete we're gonna do it. When did everyone start being such lazy asses?

I also think that would be somewhat overoptimistic a goal. FF7 took about 150 artists over two years. For two guys that would be 75 years.
And also- why? Surely it would be better to make your own game in a similar style. I just don't get why so many people make things like Quake total conversions of existing properties like Star Wars. Shows a total lack of imagination in my book. It's hard enough to get unique games off the ground commercially, but in a free environment like this, you can do anything you want.
Not to mention that it blatantly breaches the original owner's copyright and you can get in serious trouble.
Sorry to sound a bit negative, but I'd really much rather see people put that sort of enthusiasm into something new.

OMG!!! I had an idea to make a game exactly like that (you're a shark swimming around and just eat) but of course, like all good ideas, someone else thought of it first. *sigh*

robinb makes a good point. WHY? the game is great already, im not sure many people would play a remake that just has extras. no matter how many extras you put in it just won't be the same experience. no one but the original team can create the experience that ff7 had.
make an ff7 mini game or something. something do-able that has more potential for being great work. however, if in 75 years you get done, tell me beacuse i might be alive to see it. but i thik by then theres probably an official remake. hah.
Zoso,
You can count me in on the project. I do alot of 2D/Design and Skinning. I'd be happy to help with a Final Fantasy 7-like game. But, an idea hit me a while back.
Wouldn't it be interesting to remake a game; With a complete Graphic Overhaul.
But, Imagine it take place as either of these three options.
A. A story of a Shinra Soldier
B. The story of Zach
C. The story of what happened in the two years between FFVII and Advent Children.
Sure, as you all have stated FFVII was a huge project. But dont turn down a refreshing idea, just because the goals are set in the stars. Let him try to work to reach his dream. It might've taken two years to create--but, If you pick up the Final Fantasy VII S.Guide it has everything in there that one would ever need. Recreating a game from a base is easier than making it from scratch. Why do you think he posted here? Read it over again, he's asking for help.
Two people working on FFVII?
Nah...
Its more like Three and more coming.

You could do a "Starship troopers" theme with the Shinra soldiers! :deal:

A remake of ff7 eh? I agree with pretty much everyone. Too much work. However, thats what people said to me about my demoreel. But I got it done with fairly good results. But I must say this is too much. But why not? You've got nothing to lose.
I really like Usul's idea about following the story-line of someone else. This way you could work in the ff7 universe and create something new. Plus it could be shorter and more attainable.
ĄGoodluck!

I think the reason that everyone is so synical about the darn thing, is the fact that... well honistly.. MANY and I me MANY of us have seen projects MUCH smaller than this fall apart at the seams, and we know this project is "different" because you guys are commited but so where all of those
half made wastes of energy!
I for one have seen enough projects blow up in my face to understand
the difficulty of following up on ones promise of completion
Good luck, I hope you prove all us non-believers wrong.... doubt it though

Not trying to be negative or anything but that`s going to be the heck a lot of work. First of all, the most difficult part will be remake of the engine. The pre-rendered background systems used by the final fantasy series(7,8,9) is a complex piece and emulating this will take a lot and a lot of time(I`ve personally tried it for my ff game which is still in the making).Real time levels(in ffx or ffx-2) could be a very nifty solution but that`s up to you guys if you wanna use it(perhaps it wouldn`t suit ur ff7 remake).
Before going deeper, try to make a feasibility study of what you guys can do and what you can`t and stick to that(for example the feasiblity for the models:do u have someone draw them, model them, texture them, animate them, etc). In this way, you`ll know the scope of your project and in this way, I hope you won`t abandon half way.

What type of final fantasy game are you making??
KovaSteel
07-07-2004, 05:30 AM
It`s gonna be a 3D ff with real time levels. I`ve tried for a long time to emulate pre-rendered bgs but it got really nasty. I could only do so in certain scenes. So I`m sticking to real time cuz it facilitates collision, lighting and it`s newer technology.I`m trying to create my own sequel with my own storyline but with the main elements of the ffs like a modified atb system(Also known as real-time atb :). I got some old screens so if you want to see them, i`ll post.

Yeah man I would love to see more of what you're doing.

Here`s some old screens. I`m redoing it all cuz a change in story line along with the main engine(coded in Blitz3d).
The character models are for testing and from Polycount.
A playable normal atb system 1 VS 2.Support for 2 additional characters was supposed to follow but I`m recoding it all for my new Real time ATB system.

The screens are not too shabby but I hope to really improve while redoing it all. But due to a lack of modellers, progress is really slow.MODELLERS AND ARTISTS ARE WELCOMED!!Check out the TriglowSoft website.

Although it sounds like a great idea... Im sorry to say it but it will be utterly impossible to do. But Im in for all I care! I loved FFVII, but unfortinately the game has aged terribly and is totaly unplayable. You can reach me at my e-mail address pietflikkerlig@yahoo.com
I have 3d Studio Max and Alias Wavefront Maya experience, currently studying to become a animator at a animation college.
So, just mail me, Im really eager to help!!!!
Hope to hear from you soon!

I wish you luck on this project, and i hope you will give it the dedication it deserves. Final Fantasys are very hard to remake indeed as there are so many models textures and animations that go into them.
being a final fantasy fan i just wanted to wish you luck on this and i hope you will give it the dedication it deserves

dang... after being disappointed by the movie (I thought it would be based on the actual events in the game... not after), i wanted to do something like write a book, make a story that plays the music when you read the story going page2page...

On a positive note, I think you guys will have an awesome time making this game. Regardless of the undertaking if you love it that much you will enjoy yourselves. The main problem I find though is this:
What are you going to do with the game? Are you going to show it to the world? Make it freely available etc.?
Are you making it just to enhance it?
Square-Enix is extremely watchful for projects like this. There was an awesome project being done for a chrono trigger remake and it was sent a "cease and desist" order from Square-Enix's lawyers. This has happened with quite a few remakes of theirs.
In the current wave of FF7 products being released by Square-Enix (FF7:Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerebus, Advent Children, FF7 Tech Demo for PS3), I would suggest it is unwise to start a project utilising one of their key franchises.
If you have the passion, i'm sure you'll make it well, but just be aware of the legal ramifications.
