View Full Version : Need help for fur!!
maboroshi 06-21-2004, 09:09 AM Hi all,
I am trying to use maya fur but I have some problems concerning the paint fur attributes tool. Actually I can't paint the direction as I want. Even if I change the paint value, I always get the same direction. Plus I did the whole mapping for my wild boar (yes, I forgot to mension it but I modeled a wild boar and yet, I would like to create a map for the attributes) but the maps I get look really weird. They don't even have the shape of the mapping I made. Is there a way to have good maps and to paint direction?
If anyone have a solution, please help me!!!!

Make sure your normals face the right way (outwards, pobably!)
If your painting onto polys, make sure you've created good contiguous UVs first.
If you're trying to delete or edit a 'directional' map look at the 'polar map' attribute to make changes.
>edit: if you can still do it, delete the UV mapping/editing history before painting, also<
Hope that helps :)

thank you very much atwooki. I'm going to try your methods. I'll give you some news. Thanks again

oh, dear If I am not mistaken you are only looking out for readymade textures
try painting your textures in Photoshop by exporting UV snapshot , and about the fur painting direction you should always have a support of cv curves specifying perfect direction where gravity is o. If you still have a problem

well, thank you! Maboroshi for your E mail
and on your request, I did little bit of research...
so I want to suggest you some steps for creation of your wild boar, I think it
will be a little difficult concept to understand without any picture references.
a)Modelling wild boar:
1)not only for wild boar, it implies for all sort of polygon
modelling. Creat your model by poly with the use of edit polygon
sub-menu i.e. extrude face, merge vertices...etc ,etc.
2)when you are satisfied with the detailing and want to smoothen out the surface,
please avoid using poly smooth .....instead you can use
edit >modify > convert polygon to subdivide
(this will give you smooth effect and that will be with minimum faces) and as you know
subdivide surfaces are easy to
make changes. You will be able to make tremendous changes without much headache;
you will really love it ...
3)Once you are happy with the model you can very well change your model from subdivision
to polygon because polygon helps a lot while texturing..so..
edit >modify > convert subdivision to polygon
4)Your model may have some problems like normals facing inside and not to the face
check your normals by display > Polygon component > normals
and you can repair it by selecting faces of your model and Edit Polygon >Set to face
(Maboroshi dont worry because you have not followed this steps ,you can still go for
texturing and if you want to try this steps you can go to previous files the file
for which you have not added polysmooth..I will be happy if you have a good habbit
of saving your files with every important operation naming them with a graduall increase
in number, though Maya provides settings for Increament on save in preferences but
I will suggest you the previous method)
b)Texturing:
1)well done with the modelling! now there is a need to paint it .Select your model
edit Polygon > Texture > Plannar mapping
2)Open your UV texture editor by window > UV texture Editor the image will be like
as if you are watching it in one of your panel view, like side or front ..
(make sure that your model is selected otherwise Texture editor wont show it)
3)Apply spherical or cylindrical mapping edit polygon > texture Spherical mapping
if there is a problem with that you need to clean up your model, Polygon > clean up
Caution : cleanup may delete your faces so see in your cleanup option box
make shower that you only select edges with zero length and not other
in remove geometry ,try to experiment with the settings for edges with
zero length.
this step will help you reduce complications of your model.
4)If spherical or cylindrical mapping dont work the last option will be to use
automatic mapping where you will see your model in pieces but it is little tough job
while painting textures in photoshop
Tip: texturing process needs that you work simultaneously with Maya and Photoshop
so once your file texture is added to a shader and your model, make changes you desire
in photoshop working with layers for more detailed stuff. save it and go to Maya,
in the shaders attribute and than, reload file texture so changes will be in front
of you.
5)to export your UV texture in UV texture editor
polygon > UV snapshot... save it with JPEG format.
About fur painting
well Maboroshi I will be happy if you get desire results through above procedure
and for your problem with fur....
you are right you cant use fur with polygon or subdivisions . if I am not mistaken
you are not using attach fur discription. And you are painting it with get brush >fur mel
etc.
*I want to make you clear that you are going to use nurbs model for your fur painting
for this purpose our goal is to have two models. one, what you have in polygon and the
second one which will be in nurbs for painting fur on it .The second model with nurbs
will be placed just under the skin of the polygon model, for this, nurbs model will be
little smaller in scale than the polygon model. In other words it will be like, a egg in the
egg shell.(by no means the nurbs model should show any of its part and should not penetrate
the polygon model it should not be visible after rendering.
TO MAKE A NURBS MODEL :
1)Please note that your nurbs model need not be detailed, and it will be 50% of your
polygon model detailed replica.
2)to start with, duplicate your boar model. Hide your one of the boar model , and with
displayed model selected..
Modify > Make live
(this will help you to draw cv curves directly on your boar model just follow the
method of nurbs modelling by lofting all the curves to make your nurbs boar model)
if you are not very comfortable with the total lofting try it in pieces like head
trunk legs..)because our main aim is to get something under the skin.
3)delete unwanted cv curves and even the polygon model which was modifyed to make live
display your hidden model.
TO PAINT FUR:
1)Select your polygon model and with RMB go to actions > Template. your polygon model
will be in a sort of wireframe mode.
2)select your Nurbs model and in rendering Paint Effects > make Paintable
3)We are going to paint the fur in little little patches now this patches will be according
to how the fur flows. A particular patch will have one direction like flowing downwards or
flowing backward as per the requirement of that part of the body.
4)a particular patch will be controlled by a cv curve which will be drawn by you .
so for that, consider that a cv curve is a "hair" which will start from the skin and than
flows like a hair .
5)draw a cv curve using the front panel or side, with the use of cv curve tool
6)the curve will be placed somewhere in the space, transform that near the skin as near as possible
7)go to paint Effect > get Brush select fur of your choice Paint two or three strokes just
around the curve.
8)select painted strokes in Hipergraph and in attribute field editor put "0" for gravity
your fur will be set perpendicular to respected faces.
9)Now select all the fur surounding the curve and the curve aswell, go to
Paint Effect > Curve Utilities > Set stroke control curves
now the fur will follow the cv curve .(on moving the curve the fur will follow.)
10)similarly go on painting the fur on all over the body, many a time only adding
gravity will do your job, for some parts.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, and above all I am thankful to
the Site CG TALK and all its member for making this event so prestigious.
Malborishi I will be happy to have your Email ID.Tell me more about you ....
